When I was nine we practiced a bicentennial program in our elementary school. As part of the program a teacher was explaining the verses of ‘America the Beautiful’.
“How beautiful for patriot dream,
That sees beyond the years,
Thine alabaster cities gleam,
Undimmed by human tears.
How beautiful for heroes, proved
In liberating strife,
Who more than self, their country loved,
And mercy more than life.”
She explained that the phrase ‘undimmed by human tears’ meant that we had never had an attack of a city on American soil.

The Brits burned some homes in Louisiana on their march to New Orleans in 1815 too... and they lived to regret it because they could have used the shelter during their retreat to the sea.

ReplyDeleteCBullit- The war of 1812 was the first thing my hubby pointed out to me when he read my pot too- I considered changing it or cropping, but eventually even the most dedicated blogger has family whining for their spaghetti so I left it. If I waited to do things untill I could do them perfectly they'd never be done.
ReplyDeleteBut I will mention that this was in the ultra progressive Los Angeles Unified School District- so yes, it was a miricle we were taught that and I hope the teacher didn't face disciplinary action.
Another note, My kids are in High school. The pledge is still said over the intercom, but few kids stand up and some teachers even continue to talk over it. Which to me is almost worse than not hearing it at all.
