But really, if this is how Obama does in deep blue NJ and supposedly purple VA (an 18-point blowout) think for a minute what is possible nationwide.
The Hoffman loss in NY-23 was disappointing, but hey ... We can now say it: Hofmann wasn't the most charismatic fellow. Over at Ace of Spades, one commenter called him a "doorknob." Plus, the liberal Republican Scozzafava and the clueless GOP leadership in NY did Hoffman no favors. Still, the third party route for conservatives has been and remains perilous indeed, even under the best of circumstances. Time permitting, I hope to discuss this later.
But make no mistake: Yesterday was a very, very good day. A Republican won handily in NJ ... in the era of Hope & Change (as in, Brother, can you spare some). Pinch yourself. Yes, it's true.
Things can change for the better. But it takes conservatives to be engaged and involved.
So, let's go.

My HOPE is that this will squelch the health care takeover. And cap and tax.
All the spin machines are in top gear. In reflection, Newt asked us to back a candidate who backed the Dem. I'm HOPING that quiets the RINOs a bit.
The Republican Party may want to do the unthinkable... shape their platform and candidates to fit the politics of it's base.
Amen DC, I felt good about the results too!
Amen to what Nick and Opie said. Let's hope. It is revolutionary for party to represent the rank and file, but hey ...
Lefty, glad you are feeling it. Even the loss in NY-23 shows how treacherous lib Republicans are. You can't build a winning strategy around them. Of course, reps will vary somewhat in different regions, but that's just smart politics. What we saw with Scuzzy was that she was, in fact, a Demo. If that's what it means to support a Republican, then what's the use? Saving such politicians doesn't help you build a movement. We need to build the movement around people who hold to some semblance of a right-of-center worldview.
Yeah good idea, let's blame Hoffman's loss on the GOP and Scozzafava, that way we can just forget the way his ignorance to local issues and poor self-presentation contributed to the voter's opinions.
I agree, Caitlin, that Hoffman was not an ideal candidate. If you read my post above, you can see that.
Still, had he been the Republican nominee from the outset (or we had another right of center nominee), Republicans would have run away with this. Add Scuzzy's votes to his ... you get a victory. And she was out of the race.
but NY sold out..ugh!!!
After listening to all the campaign commercials (I live in the 25th District just west of the 23rd) Hoffman certainly could have done a better job with his ads. Plus, he is kinda scary looking. Still, for a Conservative Party candidate to do this well is simply outstanding. Usually the Republican candidate tries to grab the Conservative endorsement and runs on both tickets. If Scuzzyhawhaw had removed herself from the ballot we'd have Hoffman for Congressman.
But they still have to run next year again. We'll wait and see if someone can dress Hoffman up and repackage him. Owens can't be feeling all that secure, particularly with the health care issue staring him in the face. I know that part of the state; it includes Utica, Oswego, Watertown (home of the 10th Mountain Div.) mostly rural counties.
Madison County is in the 23rd District; the county seat is Wampsville, population around 575 souls. Kinda typical.
There's nothing wrong with Hoffman that a teeth-whitening treatment wouldn't fix. Americans prefer their celebrities to look 90210 perfect.
Opus 6 wrote "Americans prefer their celebrities to look 90210 perfect."
I would like to announce that I am now canceling by run for governor of California due to ugliness. Well, at least my dog still loves me... at dinner time.
Very interesting insight, Sig. Hoffman was definitely a flawed candidate.
The final result in NY-23 doesn't fit the soundbite template. I agree that there is a lot be encouraged about.
Also, let's remember the Owens campaigned against the public option.
At least with Hoffman there was a clear choice. With Scuzzyface against a Democrat there was no difference. The 5% that voted for Scuzzyface were clueless and may have made a difference in the outcome. I personally think many voted Democrat because the whole world was trying to tell them how to vote. I think we may have seen a backlash because of that. A lot of voters telling us to mind our own business ???
