"Part of a Protected Species" ... Lt. Col. Ralph Peters with an Ice Cold Bucket of Truth

Wake up, America. It's the truth ... hard and cold (like it sometimes is). I saw this on O'Reilly's show Friday night, and it drew several "amens". Check it out:

Hey, I am off for the weekend. Every one check your caves before bedding down. Watch out for Demos voting in the middle of the night and for crazed dentists.

November 6, 2009

Here's an E-mail I received earlier today...

Craziest Action Alert You May Ever Receive

Dear Fellow Tea Party Patriots,

Thank you for your generous monetary donations this past week. We have raised over half of the funds for the Farmer Relief and Freedom Relay. That is enough to launch us. Once the checks are in, we may still send one more fund raising email out next week.

In the meantime, this maybe the craziest email you have ever received. The work we did around the country and in DC yesterday was powerful and instrumental. There were over 50,000 of you in DC in less than a week's notice. The lines outside the Congressional Office Buildings to pass through security were at or near historic levels.

The votes in favor of health care reform are fewer today than they were when we woke up yesterday morning. We are making a difference. But it still may not be enough yet.

Congressman King and Congresswoman Michele Bachmann called me this afternoon to specifically make a plea to you, the Tea Party Patriots. The Congressmen are concerned that we hit a crescendo and they want to make sure that our efforts were not in vain. We all know how much is at stake.

So, here is what these 2 Congressmen are asking Tea Party Patriots who are within driving distance of DC to do: come back tomorrow, Saturday, November 7 at 1:00 pm. Yes, I am as exhausted as you. I just got back to Atlanta and am now going to be back in DC tomorrow. Yes, I wonder why they did not just call this morning so I could stop those of you who were in DC from California, Illinois and other places and you could stay one more night.

Here is the plan and is going to sound crazy. The plan is for us to literally surround the Capitol and to make a lot of noise doing it. A LOT OF NOISE. So, bring your musical instruments, trumpets, boom boxes, snare drums, cymbals, noise makers, bag pipes, boat horns and even your crying babies. We are going to make sure they hear us NOW!!!! You I'm only joking about the crying babies. The longer we can postpone the vote on health care, the better chance we have of stopping the government from taking it over.

If there is anyway for you to drive or fly to DC and be there at 1:00 eastern, please reply to tppyes@gmail.com to let me know. If you can be there within a 4 - 6 hour drive or a 1 - 2 hour flight, consider making this sacrifice one more time.

Our Founding Fathers pledged their lives, their fortunes, and their sacred honor. They made it possible for us to make our voices heard with the gift they left to us: the Constitution. Many, many of us have sacrificed time out of our lives, our fortunes whether large or small, and are promising our sacred honor to protect the Constitution and our way of government for future generations. As much as I want to tell these two Congressmen they are crazy to ask us to do this, I realize that Tea Party Patriots has been fighting this issue since May. If it comes down to this scheduled vote tomorrow night and the health care bill passes the House by 8 or less votes and I had not made this plea to you, I will always wonder "what if?"

We are so close to turning the tide in the House of Representatives. Please join me again tomorrow as we make ourselves heard louder and louder and louder with our voices and instruments and other noise makers.

If you cannot be there (and we truly understand if you cannot), here is what you can do:
Call the Congressmen listed below in your state and tell them to vote no. Tell them a vote yes on this bill will be viewed as betrayal to the Constitution.
Forward this email to anyone you know who might be able to drive or fly to DC tomorrow or who will be willing to make phone calls

P.S. Many of you have expressed concern because the event in DC yesterday turned into a partisan love fest. Know that yesterday's event was a press conference. Tea Party Patriots as an organization was not invited to join this press conference specifically. Tea Party Patriots did not plan the event. We did not invite ourselves to be on the agenda.

When you the grassroots told us you were going, we made sure to be there to assist you in contacting your Congressmen and navigating the House Office Buildings.

I have a personal, verbal commitment from both Congressman King and Congresswoman Bachmann that it will not be that way tomorrow. The next few days, our focus must be health care. We will address partisan politics in the coming weeks after dealing with health care. Be assured this is your movement. The other National Coordinators and I will do all we can to protect your movement for you. We will ensure that Tea Party Patriots' agenda stays focused on the core principles that unified us on April 15th, July 4th, July 17th, in August, and on September 12. The are fiscal responsibility, Constitutionally limited government, and free markets.

Pudding Fatal to Militants

Four militants preparing their My*T*Fine in a Kashmir cave were attacked by a bear. Four militants go in, two militants come out.

The dead militants were identified as Mohammad Amin (alias Qaiser) and Bashir Ahmed (alias Saifullah), while two other militants, one of whom was seriously wounded, escaped the bear.

Dear Abdul:

Thank you for your invitation to Chair the Islamist Studies Union in January. I accept, although overland travel for a man my age is difficult, and I'm still burdened by my new book "Sceptres and Scimitars". But, I've been told that you have over 20,000 members now, with the Anglo-Saxon faculty heavily represented, so I will definitely come. Fifty years of Jihad contains at least four lectures. More on the subject of my first lecture in a moment.

You probably know that I played a part in changing the name of Magdalen College to Zarqawi College over twenty years ago. Our renewal work in that department actually met only token resistance. The superannuated Christian instituitions and iconography had already been emptied of meaning by the people of these lands, so the actual demolition of their symbolism and, even, architecture, was easy. But to us, Christianity even in its secular and mass cult forms was suffocating. Something as seemingly innocuous as their Christ's image on an outer garment or a cross necklace worn by a depraved popular singer was anathema to us.

In my address you've suggested I avoid mention of the mass-killings and riots of blood-letting of thirty years ago, if only that the young express some revulsion at these admonitions. They think that political and population majorities were enough to declare victory.

But you must recall that this region has a history of such cleansing and renewal. Force is more natural to them, upon reflection, to punctuate authority. It was necessary. At any rate, no one really cared, at the time, either about the Jews or about the infidels who adhered to morbid and blasphemous faiths. Today, most of the lament about, and memory of, those days come from the old of this land and not from the young. Indeed, conversion has helped. Look at the numbers! Blessings and peace be upon you!

We have many things to talk about. The Catholic problem, and the confused Pope we installed in Rome. America and the chaos in the Southwest and old Spanish territories is discouraging, I know. But the west and east coasts of America, and some northern interior places are ours, especially where there are the strong, erosive currents of a large university.

And that brings me to the subject of my first lecture. I've been considering, for some time, the possibility that their theology, once sanitized of their God, made undifferentiated goodness, or fanatical tolerance of all ways of life equally moral. It was not long before the "intelligentsia" as they called them (the style-makers as we know them) could be made to embrace and advance any idea at all, even if it had the smell of self-extinction about it. Strange. It's not rational to declare victory over a culture that was slowly committing suicide, so we must avoid spiritual pride.

But keep in mind, Abdul, that the people who might elicit your sympathy, those we've corrected and saved and eliminated, were people with a very low price tag. We recognized very early that they craved the comforts of life so much that, eventually, not killing them was perceived as a gift. Allah Akhbar.

Yours,

Ali Nidal

Local Dentist kills 3, injures 7

Three people have been killed and 7 injured at Shirlene's Salmon & Honey Shack on Fester Street in a rampage that officials believe was carried out by a local dentist who was scheduled for a Brazilian bikini wax later that afternoon.

The assailant was identified by the Carlisle Pennysaver as Dr. Charles Stearns, a local dentist. Stearns was initially reported to have been sedated with a tranquilizer dart, but police told a late night news conference that Stearns was wounded and in custody. Dr. Stearns is not talking to authorities, said police.

Stearn's brother, 'Big Frank' Stearns, issued this statement late Thursday.

"We are shocked and saddened by the terrible events at The Salmon & Honey Shack today. We send the families of the victims our most heartfelt sympathies," the statement read. "Charlie is an American citizen. He was Born in Carlisle and raised here in Carlisle... Our family loves Carlisle. We are proud of Carlisle, and saddened by today's tragedy. We hope that hate groups will not jump to conclusions"

Sterns allegedly broke through the store's front door, devoured 3 gallons of honey and almost 50 pounds of smoked salmon. He then attacked a costumed group of customers who had gathered in the store prior to the start of downtown Carlisle's annual Trout Festival & Parade. Among the wounded was a female security officer who tried to pry a package of expensive Salmon Jerky from Stearns' grasp.

At this time, officials are unwilling to speculate as to a motive for the attack.

Quiz on Ft. Hood Murderer

Nidal Malik Hasan, who murdered unarmed soldiers at Ft. Hood today along with a police officer, is, according to a family member: A) a fundamentalist Christian; B) an orthodox Jew; or C) a devout Muslim.

Now, bonus question: True or False: The latest Muslim to murder innocents also spoke approvingly of suicide bombers earlier this year.

If you want to know whether there are serious, foundational problems within Islam, note that the real concern expressed by CAIR and others today is whether there will be some sort of blowback against Muslims because of Hasan's actions.

Shouldn't there be some sort of serious scrutiny of an ideology that continues to spawn armies of zombies whose primary tactical weapon is to launch surprise attacks on non-combatants and the unarmed? Are we too politically correct to ask the tough questions? Does Islam sanction violence against infidels? If it does not, then why do so many of its adherents go down this path? And why are Muslims largely silent on this? Why is open and rampant anti-Semitism tolerated, as if it were an article of faith?

The sleuths in the MSM won't ask these questions for militant jihadis make the points of many of their post-modern critiques of Western Civilization.

Back to the reality on the ground here in Texas ... I hear a Texas woman wounded and stopped Hasan. It figures.

Now, the justice system and the 24/7 news cycle will get drunk on Hasan Fever. I need to get over to MSNBC to see if Olber-Exaggerator can bring himself to even say the name of this coward.

I say let Hasan loose and if he makes it out of Texas, he goes free.

But I jest. The Judeo-Christian value system that Hasan and his ilk decry prevents rough justice. But there will be ultimate justice.

And I've got news for you. It's not going to be dispensed by a jihadi.

Update: Took a trip to "Morning Joe", and NBC Pentagon correspondent reported that Hasan shouted "Allah Akbar!" before opening fire. Reporter on the set with Joe then said, "Let's not draw conclusions." Then, they went back to covering the AARP endorsement of the Demos' healthcare bill. Back to Fox.

Update II: Although Hasan carried out murders in military uniform, Scarborough wants us to know that Muslim in white robe on military base is not something out of the ordinary and we should not be alarmed by that.

Enarchs and H.R. 2102

What is H.R. 2102? It's the bill gaining steam to fund and start The United States Public Service Academy. What is an Enarch? To describe it, and them, let's start somewhere else, far away, in the long ago.

In 1940, the French Vichy Government concluded that French glory had faded in the preceding two to twenty years. Their solution was to establish 60 "leadership schools". The infinitive "to lead" and its tenses hadn't been stricken from the language, only from French minds, and the Germans certainly noted the irony.

One of these schools, in the southern Alps, went on to become the model, the great Ecole Nationale d'Administration. It soon became known simply as the ENA. It milled and polished truckloads of civil servants, and dumped them into French society. At first, they were the best and brightest, meritocrats, well-travelled; well-educated in every way.

By the mid 1950's, graduates were simply known as "enarchs", and the process of their advancement known as "enarchization". They filled most senior positions in French civil administration. Their numbers grew, and the story of their subsequent opportunism is complicated. It had a lot to do with the failure of the Fourth Republic, the creation of the Fifth and DeGaulle's 1958 Constitution which favored enarchs as a special political class. The Constitution was drafted by Michael Debre, one of the main architects of the ENA.

Under Debre's Constitution, civil servants could be elected to Parliament. When they left elected office, they could resume their old jobs with full benefits. Their numbers grew because the levers of power could be turned to the benefit of the enarchs as a class. Since the 1970's, it's been estimated that 70 percent of all members of Parliament have been civil servants.

Six of seventeen prime ministers since 1958 have been enarchs. Worse, the nationalization of large companies since 1936 gave enormous influence over business to civil servants. A tradition called "pantoflauge" (slippering) permits enarchs to be loaned to private companies. The end is a petrified mangerial class with its hands clasped to power and the things that sustain it.

What the French started in 1940 and codified in 1958 was the immutable government law of unitended consequences, the awful symmetry that develops when the interests of of the nation are seen to be the same as the interests of government. The goals of government are not the goals of the individual.

Here's where H.R. 2102 comes in. Many Democrats, and a few of the suspect Republicans, have seen the future, and it's Them. They've concocted an American version of the ENA. The United States Public Service Academy. Anyone interested in this monstrosity can resort to Google, and read of the sad formulae for the multiplification of liberals and other world-turners who will gorge at the public trough and manage your life.

You'll find Hillary Clinton on board, and Jim Moran, Biden and Boxer, and before he stopped drinking permanently, Teddy, and the defeated panty-waist CT Republican Chris Shays, and Specter; Sheila Jackson Lee and Conyers and Mikulski and Jim McDermott.

The USPSA is modeled after West Point (laughter here), and designed to produce 5000 graduates a year for $205 million annually. Graduates need to uphold the brain-burning 2.5 GPA in a government curriculum school. They get free education with a five-year public service requirement in "civil service, the public sector and other needed fields". How does the public sector differ from civil service, and on the other side of the looking glass, what are the other "needed fields"?

Such an idea from such people is a cancer on a free society. Civil servants churned out by an intellectual Gulag end up managing everything from Washington DC down to your local transfer station. The bad always drives out the good. H.R. 2102 is being driven in the dark, with the lights out. Pay attention. These criminals, liars, punks and shrews keep a low profile.

The Forced March to Mediocrity

By Howard W. Houchen, Canada Free Press
Thursday, November 5, 2009

“It becomes increasingly clear that the pattern of American fiscal policy is being brought into consonance with the Karl Marx communist theory that through a division of the existing wealth, mankind will be brought to a universal standard of life - a degree of mediocrity to which the Communists and their fellow travelers seek to reduce the people of this great nation. Whether it be by accident or design, such policy, formulated with reckless indifference to the preservation of constitutional liberty and our free enterprise economy, coupled with rapid centralization of power in the hands of a few, is leading us toward a communist state with as dreadful certainty as though the leaders of the Kremlin themselves were charting our course.” General Douglas McArthur, 1952
Today, the United States of America, a nation that once prospered beyond imagination, and stood as the final barrier between liberty loving societies and tyrannical regimes on a global scale, is in the Twilight Zone. What was up is down, what was unjust is just, what once was recognized as tyranny is now called freedom and what was once the domain of the citizenry is now the realm of a ruling regime that chooses to force all of us to accept and participate in the national March to Mediocrity.

WE, the people, are being enslaved as a result of our own machinations. Under OUR watch was created a blind and deaf behemoth we now recognize as a central-planning collectivist federal government. Blind, because it claims it fails to see how its policies are destroying the American character and is shredding the intent of OUR founders…The Republic. Deaf, because it claims to not hear the high-decibel majority voice…crying out for the continuation and protection of individual Freedom. What have WE created?

The perverted, and yes, un-American, pieces of legislation oozing their way through the halls of Congress over the past few years have taken advantage of our “lack of duty” to govern ourselves. We now find ourselves in a predicament that we have been warned of countless times, over decades, generations, and centuries…no longer are Americans a self-governed citizenry, we are virtually dictated to by that which we are supposed to control.

Democrats, Incumbents Get Wake Up Call

RICHMOND, Va. — Eager to drain the 2009 elections of drama and import, White House press secretary Robert Gibbs claimed Tuesday night that President Barack Obama was “not watching returns.”

You can be sure that he is studying them closely now: The off-year elections were, in two big races, anunmistakable rebuke of Democrats, reshuffling Obama’s political circumstances in ways likely to have severe near-term consequences for his policy agenda and larger governing strategy.

Independents took flight from Democrats. They suffered humiliating gubernatorial losses in traditionally Democratic New Jersey, where Obama lent his prestige in a pair of eleventh-hour campaign rallies Sunday, and in Virginia, which had been trending leftward and just last year was held up as an example of how Obama was redrawing the political map in his favor.

Tuesday night’s trends were emphatically not in Obama’s favor. Among those paying closest attention are dozens of Democrats who won formerly Republican congressional districts in 2006 and 2008 and are up for reelection in 2010. Many of these pickups that powered the Democrats’ recapture of Congress came in Southern and border states, or in the Ohio River Valley, where political conditions are similar to those in Virginia.

Obama now faces a much tougher challenge persuading these mostly moderate Democrats to put themselves further at risk by backing such liberal priorities as expanding government’s role in heath care or limiting greenhouse gases.

More here.

Good Night Last Night, but Remember ...

Just because Pres. Obama campaigned personally for Corzine and Deeds ... and economic issues and voter angst over destructive runaway leftist policies drove the electorate in NJ and VA, it doesn't mean that yesterday's election was a referendum on Obama. Pay no attention to that man behind Corzine's podium.

But really, if this is how Obama does in deep blue NJ and supposedly purple VA (an 18-point blowout) think for a minute what is possible nationwide.

The Hoffman loss in NY-23 was disappointing, but hey ... We can now say it: Hofmann wasn't the most charismatic fellow. Over at Ace of Spades, one commenter called him a "doorknob." Plus, the liberal Republican Scozzafava and the clueless GOP leadership in NY did Hoffman no favors. Still, the third party route for conservatives has been and remains perilous indeed, even under the best of circumstances. Time permitting, I hope to discuss this later.

But make no mistake: Yesterday was a very, very good day. A Republican won handily in NJ ... in the era of Hope & Change (as in, Brother, can you spare some). Pinch yourself. Yes, it's true.

Things can change for the better. But it takes conservatives to be engaged and involved.

So, let's go.

Will Corzine Allies Steal the Election in New Jersey? ACORN, Dirty Tricks and Absentee Ballot Fraud

Capitol Confidential brings us this rundown on the New Jersey race...

New Jersey Governor Jon Corzine is locked in the political fight of his life. With just hours left before voting, polls show a neck-and-neck race between Corzine and GOP candidate Chris Christie, with Independent candidate Chris Daggett pulling significant support. Obama and VP Biden are making last ditch pitches for the embattled governor. But evidence is building that Corzine’s campaign may see its only salvation is in rigging the election.

The first sign is a straight-up dirty trick. Daggett’s run for office is certainly convenient for Corzine, as he will help split any anti-Corzine vote. And, as a Corzine political appointee, one wonders if his candidacy wasn’t a set up to begin with. Now, in the final days of the campaign, it appears state democrats are paying for robo calls supporting Independent Chris Daggett. First reported here, the robo calls attack Christie (but not Corzine) and promote Daggett. At the end of the call, it is mentioned that the calls are paid for by a “project of the NJSDC.” No idea what that acronym stands for, but New Jersey State Democratic Committee, isn’t too big of a stretch. More interesting is the fact that the return number on the calls is the same number that was used to promote Maryland Governor Martin O’Malley’s election in closing days of the 2006 race.

More telling that the fix is in, however, is the sudden appearance of ACORN on the scene. Not by name, mind you, as their reputation is so tarnished that even New Jersey Democrats don’t want to be associated with them. No, in New Jersey ACORN sought cover behind its big brother, SEIU, specifically SEIU Local 32BJ.

The political director for the SEIU local is Peter Colavito. Just last year, he was ACORN’s political director in New York, working directly under Bertha Lewis, ACORN’s CEO and co-chair of ACORN-backed Working Families Party. He was, and remains, a top official and board member of the Working Families Party in New York. In fact, his wife is currently an employee of the Working Families Party. Corzine has made much of his endorsement by the SEIU local, failing to mention the union’s deep ties to both ACORN and its Working Families Party in New York.

The Cultural Scourge of French Line Dancing Comes Under State Ccntrol
This is old news, but the disgusting scene here is a band of French Line Dancers enjoying themselves in Paris. Before you know it they'll be adopting dance hall names like Enfant Samples, Roi Clarque and Bucque Henri, shrieking "Hey Gran-Pere, what's for supper!"

Then some subversive wag will yell back: "Cognac Shrimp en Beurre blanc sauce, Coquilles Saint-Jacques, peas with black eyes, bread of corn and Lone Star Beer!" This Reign of Terror must be killed in les cradle! The wild, decadent marotte le Americain has to be regulated!

Now Country and Western has become so big in France that the country's bureaucrats have decided to bring the craze under state control.

The French administration has moved to create an official country dancing
diploma as part of a drive to regulate the fad. Authorized instructors who have been on publically funded training
courses will be put in charge of line dancing lessons and
balls.

Purges? Or Staying True to Conservative Values.

Don't fall for the hype that conservative wins in tomorrow's elections sound the knell for purges based on conservative "purity". There is still room for differing viewpoints in the conservative movement. We will not all agree about each and every issue that is out there. But you have to be kidding me when a gal like Scozzafava calls herself a Republican while representing unions, card check, failed stimulus and then goes on to endorse the DEMOCRAT candidate! Gimme a BREAK! Now the LIBS are whining that conservatives have begun "Stalinist Purges"???? Excuse me. Stalin did not believe in freedom, capitalism and the American Constitution. These are the candidates we want. The candidates we must INSIST upon! Don't let Gibb's cynical words poison your heart. We are on the right track here. Stay on course.

Pamela Geller at American Thinker wrote:
We all sucked it up. We went along. We embraced the ticket in the spirit of AROO -- (any Republican over Obama) -- and we held our noses until Sarah Palin came along. Ah, just a spoonful of Sarah helped the medicine go down.

But now it's time to clean house. Newt and his ilk will be relegated to the dustbin of history, and deservedly so. Enough with the old, in with the true!

Nothing happens for decades, and then decades happen in a day. So it was with 911, and so it is with Barack Obama in the White House. This terrible compromise between the RINOs and the conservatism is over. In any compromise between individual rights and collectivism, collectivism profits. It's all on the back of the individual. Basta!

The new Republican partiers - Palin, Michelle Bachmann, Allen West - these people are our future. The RINOs belong to the past. It is over for them. It's over for the Newts, for Romneys, the Steeles, the David Keenes, the Norquists, the Lindsey Grahams. Scozzafava's failure was just the beginning. You ain't seen nuthin yet. It is time to kick the RINOs to da curb.

The first traitor to go must be Olympia Snowe.

It's time to take back the Republican Party.

But first we must purge the voter rolls of all the Democrat fraud and skullduggery. Americans deserve clean elections.

It's time to take back America.

China looks to export censorship

A few days before the start of this year's Melbourne International Film Festival its executive director received an "audacious" telephone call.

BBC News, Beijing

An official from China's consulate in the city called him to "urge" the festival to withdraw a film about the Chinese activist Rebiya Kadeer.

Beijing then tried to persuade the organisers of the Frankfurt Book Fair not to allow two Chinese writers to attend an event.

China says it does not interfere in the internal affairs of other countries.
But some see these acts as an attempt by China to use abroad the tough censorship measures it constantly employs at home.

Intimidation and threats

Richard Moore, the Melbourne festival's executive director, said he was astonished to receive the call from the city's Chinese consulate.

"It came down to [the consular official] saying we need to justify our decision to include the film in the programme. It was a remarkable display of confidence and arrogance," he said.

The festival decided to ignore the advice and go ahead with the film - about an activist who campaigns for better rights for China's Uighur minority - but that did not end the issue.

The festival organisation was subjected to an intense campaign of threats, intimidation and disruption, although it is not clear who - if anyone - orchestrated the campaign.

The festival e-mail address received insulting messages, there were waves of annoying phone calls and the fax machine was jammed with callers.

Some notes to the organisers contained messages threatening Mr Moore's family.

Internet hackers managed to break into the festival's online booking site, making it appear that session tickets had been sold out.

Hackers also managed to post a Chinese flag on the main website and Chinese film-makers withdrew their movies from the festival.

California Unites to Defend ACORN against Attack from Media Giants

Attorney General (and Gubernatorial candidate) Jerry Brown probes into ACORN video flap

Attorney General Jerry Brown's office has opened an investigation into the controversy surrounding videos that purportedly show members of community organizing group ACORN giving advice on how to open a brothel.

In a letter to Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger dated Sept. 25, Chief Deputy Attorney General James M. Humes said the office has "opened an investigation of both ACORN and the circumstances under which ACORN employees were videotaped." The governor had asked Brown two weeks ago to look into the incidents.

The probe was sparked by a series of hidden-camera videos in which a couple posing as a pimp and a prostitute are advised on how to set up a prostitution business by people identified as workers for the Association of Community Organizations for Reform Now. The videos were taken in Washington D.C., San Diego, San Bernardino and cities in several other states.

Members of the organization are also under investigation in other states for alleged irregularities in registering voters.

Schwarzenegger issued a statement praising Brown's decision to investigate. "I am outraged and deeply concerned by these allegations," the statement said. "If these reports are true, they warrant prosecution under the fullest extent of the law."

Some people ain't understanding the whole Socialist ethic

That whole brotherhood of man thing...

... sure does work out well, on paper at least:

Just as Le Corbusier's white cruciform towers once excited visions of the industrial-age city of the future, so Vélib’, Paris’s bicycle rental system, inspired a new urban ethos for the era of climate change.

Residents here can rent a sturdy bicycle from hundreds of public stations and pedal to their destinations, an inexpensive, healthy and low-carbon alternative to hopping in a car or bus.

But this latest French utopia has met a prosaic reality: Many of the specially designed bikes, which cost $3,500 each, are showing up on black markets in Eastern Europe and northern Africa. Many others are being spirited away for urban joy rides, then ditched by roadsides, their wheels bent and tires stripped.

With 80 percent of the initial 20,600 bicycles stolen or damaged, the program's organizers have had to hire several hundred people just to fix them. And along with the dent in the city-subsidized budget has been a blow to the Parisian psyche.

"The symbol of a fixed-up, eco-friendly city has become a new source for criminality," Le Monde mourned in an editorial over the summer. "The Vélib’ was aimed at civilizing city travel. It has increased incivilities."

Most Odious Words/Phrases in the English Language: #1

"It is what it is" ...

Here is what some one who uses this phrase really means: "Please, please think I am intelligent and know that while I have no idea what nihilism is, I gladly bend over and take what ever it is ... and then I will glibly declare that "it is," I don't care what Bill Clinton said, I think I know what it means. Please strike me squarely in a painful location for trying to sound smart when I am really just wanting to give in and end all discussion and/or productive efforts in the current circumstances."

Think about where a conversation goes after this phrase is spewed into it. Exactly. It's over. IIWII basically communicates ... let's quit. Better yet, let's justify quitting without knowing why. How about it? There's no reason to wrestle any further. By disguising the meaning of the phrase without saying so, you really can't tell that's what it going on. It odiousness defined. Plus, it's doublespeak such that every one can have their own definition while nodding in agreement with those who have their own contrary definition. Agreement without resolution. Sounds like "Bipartisanship's" cousin.

Well, hopefully, you've had a little fun and had your thinking challenged a bit as we counted down the Top 10 most odious words/phrases. So, have you noticed any common themes? I would submit that our Dirty Diez each in some way obscure meaning, display cowardice, and/or demonstrate laziness.
