17 bases in Afghanistan have suspended serving troops breakfast; more bases will stop on Feb. 1

Washington, D.C. – Rep. Bruce Braley (IA-01) today wrote Army Secretary John McHugh to express “growing concern” regarding Army actions that have ended service of breakfast to American troops serving at 17 US military outposts in Afghanistan.

Braley has also been informed by the Army that this policy will be expanded to more locations in Afghanistan beginning on February 1st.

“I am troubled that the Army would deny any deployed troops three meals per day, regardless of force size,” Braley wrote. “These men and women put their lives on the line every day to protect the very freedoms we cherish. The exhaustive mental and physical labor that is required by soldiers to fight in harsh and unforgiving conditions is tremendous. We shouldn’t deny our troops something as fundamental as a proper meal.

“I am positive that with the logistical mastery the Army has exhibited in combat operations around the world, you can logistically administer the procedure of serving breakfast every day.”

The issue was brought to Braley’s attention by concerned family members of Iowa soldiers serving in Afghanistan.

There is some word now that the DOD is doing this in preparation of troop reductions. They are "streamlining the logistics process" for these bases and troops will be served MRE's. I wonder if they'll streamline ammo too.

It Was Allah's Will

A brand spanking new Airbus 340-600, the largest passenger airplane ever built, sits just outside its hangar in Toulouse , France without a single hour of airtime.

Enter the Arab flight crew of Abu Dhabi Aircraft Technologies (ADAT) to conduct pre-delivery tests on the ground, such as engine run-ups, prior to delivery to Etihad Airways in Abu Dhabi .

The ADAT crew taxied the A340-600 to the run-up area.

Then they took all four engines to take-off power with a virtually empty aircraft. Not having read the run-up manuals, they had no clue just how light an empty A340-600 really is.

The take-off warning horn was blaring away in the cockpit because they had all 4 engines at full power. The aircraft computers thought they were trying to take off, but it had not been configured properly (flaps/slats, etc.)

Then one of the ADAT crew decided to pull the circuit breaker on the Ground Proximity Sensor to silence the alarm. This fools the aircraft into thinking it is in the air. The computers automatically released all the brakes and set the aircraft rocketing forward.

The ADAT crew had no idea that this is a safety feature so that pilots can't land with the brakes on.

Not one member of the seven-man Arab crew was smart enough to throttle back the engines from their max power setting, so the $200 million brand-new aircraft crashed into a blast barrier, totaling it.

The extent of injuries to the crew is unknown due to the news blackout in the major media in France and elsewhere because coverage of the story was deemed insulting to Muslim Arabs.

You might think that England's National Health Service was designed by Dr. Kevorkian except that Kevorkian killed his patients in a more humane manner than the torturous, lingering deaths imposed at Stafford Hospital. From the UK Telegraph:

Patients lying starving, soiled and in pain. Over-worked staff dogged by targets. Laura Donnelly tells how a culture of fear meant that ticking boxes trampled over the basic needs of the most vulnerable.

By the time Stafford hospital's failings were exposed by regulators up to 1,200 patients had died needlessly.

It was the scandal that shamed the NHS.

Hundreds of hospital patients died needlessly. In the wards, people lay starving, thirsty and in soiled bedclothes, buzzers droning hopelessly as their cries for help went ignored. Some received the wrong medication; some, none at all.

Over 139 days, the public inquiry into the Stafford hospital scandal has heard testimony from scores of witnesses about how an institution which was supposed to care for the most vulnerable instead became a place of danger.

The Brits knocked off 400 patients a year at just this one hospital. Someone ought to check to see what they were burning during the winter to heat the place.

The Alagoas Redemption

Obviously these men were cat burglars.

A cat trained by prisoners to deliver cell phones and tools to dig tunnels was caught at a jail in northeastern Brazil after sneaking in with forbidden items strapped to its body.

"An agent saw the cat and went to look at it closely because something about it seemed wrong," Marcelo Avelino, the head of the prison guards' union, told the O Globo newspaper.

The agent found a bag tied to the animal's body filled with saw blades and drill parts for concrete drilling and digging tunnels, along with a cell phone complete with battery and charger, Avelino added.

The cat had often been seen coming in and out of the Alagoas jail.

Prison officer Luiz de Oliveira Souza told the G1 news website that prisoners had raised the cat and that relatives would often take it home after a prison visit.

"We were very surprised by this new tactic of prisoners," who trained the animal so that it returned to the prison and even managed to carry materials, the agent added.

Budget Cuts: $38,500,000,000

So, in order to gain a proper perspective let's remove 8 zeros and pretend that the federal numbers are actually your family's budget. Now the numbers still represent our nation's crisis but at a personal level that we can fully understand and appreciate.

New Credit Card Debt: $16,500

Outstanding Balance Owed On The Credit Card: $142,710

The numbers ain't quite up to snuff as the national debt is now over $16 trillion but everything else is close enough for gubmint work. I wish I could say that this perspective was the product of my own creative juices, but all I did was dress the language up a bit. I saw a similar image posted on a friend's Facebook page (with out a source) and I cannot give proper credit where it is due.
