When I was nine we practiced a bicentennial program in our elementary school. As part of the program a teacher was explaining the verses of ‘America the Beautiful’.
“How beautiful for patriot dream,
That sees beyond the years,
Thine alabaster cities gleam,
Undimmed by human tears.
How beautiful for heroes, proved
In liberating strife,
Who more than self, their country loved,
And mercy more than life.”
She explained that the phrase ‘undimmed by human tears’ meant that we had never had an attack of a city on American soil.

Did your teacher forget the Brits burning Washington during the War of 1812?
Too bad they're pussies now, we could use another such fire.
cbull, why do you always have to be so critical? Ain't you never heard of poetic license?
Lovely sentiment.
Yeah, I was getting all stoked to go after the Lymies again, but C-Bull beat me to it.
Goomba, baby, we are getting ready to make some hay in these United States. You gotta believe it. Be ready.
Even Larry "Okay, I am supposedly center-right but I will suck up to Obama, too" Sabato says a 20-30 seat house swing in 2010. Connecticut is in play, among other spots. Get ready.
No matter who is elected, though, it is apparent that the powers that be can't just roll over us any more. Their media shills are going down with them.
Rock and roll ...
I thought so too, Ope. Especially juxtaposed with that photo. When you go to her site you can read the rest of that same post.
I just went back and read that post. You are lying. You might have been 29 when you practiced your bicentennial play.
Sorry, that was the other blogger. You can get the true scoop at dcfactcheckgoomb.org.
I done it just like you said, Nickie.
I went and I visited and I said hi and I told her you sent me and I added me as a follower and I put her a link on my blog.
Good stuff... hope we can drive her some traffix.
The Brits burned some homes in Louisiana on their march to New Orleans in 1815 too... and they lived to regret it because they could have used the shelter during their retreat to the sea.
I digress.
Do they even sing these patriotic songs in school anymore? Or do they sing that Dear Leader song that is on YouTube?
Nickie - Lynnae is a fine blogger, considering where she lives too she needs all the support she can get, (I know what it feels like to live in an ultralib area). Thanks for pointing readers to her.
DC, you optimism is contagious. Cover your mouth.
There are folks already to rest on the minor success of the Tea Parties. They've gotta long long fight ahead. We're herding weasels here.
You planning the victory BBQ ain't helping a thing. Reset to vigilant and sullen, my friend.
Sol, you're a generous guy. Thanks.
LL... patriotic songs??? They don't even pledge allegiance anymore, do they?
Rebel, what part of the coast do you hail from?
Semper Vigilant, but ...
Never sullen.
Bom dia grato pela visita
Obrigado, Pedro. Gostei da visita. Estou orgulhoso de estar no mesmo time que vocĂȘ.
CBullit- The war of 1812 was the first thing my hubby pointed out to me when he read my pot too- I considered changing it or cropping, but eventually even the most dedicated blogger has family whining for their spaghetti so I left it. If I waited to do things untill I could do them perfectly they'd never be done.
But I will mention that this was in the ultra progressive Los Angeles Unified School District- so yes, it was a miricle we were taught that and I hope the teacher didn't face disciplinary action.
Another note, My kids are in High school. The pledge is still said over the intercom, but few kids stand up and some teachers even continue to talk over it. Which to me is almost worse than not hearing it at all.
