This is a post from Opie's site. The battle has begun.

When the story of this legislation is told, don't be the one who says "I should have done something!"

FIRE UP THE PHONES, MELT THE FAXES

Our legislature, apparently, is going to attempt to pass Obamacare in the next few days. It is crucial to contact the 13 members of the Senate Finance Co
mmittee and let them know how you feel about this. No on Cloture is a good idea for a talking point. I'm not sure the emails in this list work. I tried a couple and got delivery failure notices. I hear these guys change their email addresses regularly.

Thanks for the hat tip and getting the word out, Nickie. This Obamacare thing has had me on edge all year. I remember being told as a kid not to go into medicine because it would be socialized some day. I hope the day has not come that America would allow a government takeover of 20% of the economy. They say it is 16%, but there are a lot of ancillary services and hardware that are not factored in. This thing is HUGE.

We need to stop this nightmare from happening. Thanks for the information. I will be calling or emailing these senators. They must have the fear of God put into them say they vote NO on Obamacare.

Ope, we're all in this together.

Teresa. the only two ways to put the fear of God into politicians is:

1. With God
2. Threaten their graft

scunny, we disagree on that one. Everything should be for profit.

US Healthcare should be made to break-even at the most, as the businesses that run them are relying on peoples illnesses to make a vast profit. How unGodly is that? As a UK resident, all I can do is draw comparison to our own recently maligned National Health Service.
In UK the NHS has suffered as firstly, Thatcher, then her successors tried to run this 'public' service as a business. The N in NHS means National and should be run for the benefit of the UK people, even if it is for a percieved 'loss' because the nature of a public service is to use public funds for public use. Thatcher (et al) forgot Nye Beavan's founding principle.

@Scunnert, @TITVS-ADVXAS,
Okay. You don't think anyone in the health care system should be running on a profit. What if you were a doctor with 3 kids and a wife and you had to feed, clothe, pay your family's medical bills, credit cards, vacations, etc, and if you broke even and didn't make a profit how in the heck would you make one single penny to support that family if as you claim that the health care system shouldn't make a profit?

Clearly that's impossible. There must be some profits in order for people to be able to survive. If there was no profit there would simply be no incentives for people to become doctors in the first place. Then, who the heck would you go to for treatment? Plus, there would be absolutely NO way for people to be able to provide for and take care of themselves and their families.

Unless you don't believe in personal responsibility and believe the government should provide everything for you from cradle to grave? Then, I just feel sorry for you because then obviously you have no idea what the term freedom means.

You who rail against profits. You are thieves. You propose to steal another man's livelihood. Doctors work 16 hour days. They sacrifice much so they can provide for their families. Who the heck do you think you are. What gives you the right to steal another man's business, treasure or hard work. Go find a nice, socialist country to live in. We Americans reward excellent doctors by visiting them. The bad ones we avoid. It is called "the marketplace".

Thanks, Nickie, I'm on it.

But why the hell do they change their email addresses regularly? They aren't in a witness protection program, they are supposed to be representing the people. That might be easier to do if the people could tell them what we think.

Oops, never mind, I forgot, they don't represent us, they represent Washington. Whatever was I thinking?

Oh, but Teresa (snark alert), don't you understand, doctors want to rack up six figure student loan debt so they can give their services away for free. I mean it IS for the common good, right?

I understand Titus' and Scunny's take. Once the premise is accepted that medical care is a right, it becomes the government's job to make sure it is provided. Private medicine then becomes the scapegoat because they cannot operate through bureaucratic government oversight and taxation on every level... local, state and federal. Private medicine becomes the enemy. Profit becomes evil.

But it's private medicine that has provided the USA the most advanced medical services on the planet. It's too successful. It shouldn't make money. Let's kill it.

Health care should never be for profit.

Take the profit motive out of health care, and you'll remove quality, too. Might not happen over night, but give it two or three years and take a look at waiting times for tests and surgeries, access to specialists, investment in research and development of new drugs and diagnostic equipment. Then come back and tell me that taking the profit motive out was a good thing.

Thanks Iggie. We certainly agree on this one.
