Difficult question. I've been thinking about it for a long time. Long-winded...
To answer it you have to put Obama aside. He's moderately bright but unimaginative and uncreative. What looks like intelligence is just the facile mannerism he's picked up by being shaped and pushed through the hothouses of the academic Leftosphere.
Any truly intelligent, observant man would reject the mechanistic, socialistic bullshit he's feasted upon all his life. He's the fruit of a process, representative of something bigger and worse, and he's stupid in important ways.
What created him started in the 19th century. The alienation of intellectuals from the business end of life and the rise of the social sciences. You can piece this together from there to here, with a stop at Orwell's pithy observations about left intellectuals in the 30's. Resentful, arrogant, scornful of the mildest patriotism and loyalties, they were utterly without virtue or merit.
We're on the Britain's path, which is government by leftist nihilists, techno-weenies, specialists and the managerial class.
We will have to root them out. Elections are only the beginning. This is total war.
For whatever reason (maybe that we WORK for a living), the right seems to be like an old brick oven: it takes a lot to get it heated up, but then it does its work and doesn't cool off very quickly, though there are exceptions. The detached leftist intellectuals of the '30s got their utopia shattered after Pearl Harbor; then one of their own was in charge of the Manhattan Project. Go figure.
Actually, If you remember, it used to be proper to stand at attention during the Stars Spangled Banner. Obama doesn't even do that. If you look at the photo below, you can clearly see he isn't bowing.
I think that the left's response will be that we're taking this out of context, and the POTUS was about to point out that the Emperor's shoes were untied.

So now it's a race, Rhod. How much damage can he do before the backlash? Or do we fool ourselves by imagining a substantial backlash?

The Vacationer-in-Chief... but at least that Emperor has clothes, unlike ours.
Velcro, the Right don't have the luxury of focused hatred. We have children to raise, mortgages to pay, and God to fear.
The Left can hate all day long.
I don't know about a backlash.
Leftism feeds on peacetime and excess prosperity like a carrion bird. I think it's a form of moral decay and decadence.
Velcro is right. Reality blows it away...for a while. The same will happen again.
I believe this. I hate it, but I'm not afraid.
Present ...

Leftist Moron

Interestingly that's the first time I heard thaaaat rendition of the anthem- it's even more atrocious than I'd heard. Was that lady having a seizure?
Real good question...!
