Your president is showing an understanding of Japanese etiquette. Where status is equal the younger individual should bow more deeply to the older one. I don't think you can read too much into this, he's merely done his homework (which none of the other leaders could be bothered to do). Reflects well on the USA surely?
Japanese etiquette and its imperial pretensions was expressed in Manchuria, Bataan and Singapore, and lots of other places. I learned a lot about their etiquette from the old soldiers assembled on Bird Cage Walk in '95.
Don't be foolish. If this were "etiquette", the posturing knucklehead in the White House would have done this with Elizabeth II, and every Japanese citizen he met.
If this idiot thinks America is still tarnished by its race relations, then Japan is still tarnished by its past and the things done in the name of its emporer. He can't dissemble everywhere and still be considered rational.
The relativistic, idiosyncratic world you libs inhabit is astonishing.
And by the way, you might have guessed that I didn't vote for him, but he represents me, and courtesy to Everyman doesn't include a freaking bow. I don't recognize the Japanese royal family as other than corporeal creatures, and neither should you.
BTW I am not condoning bowing/grovelling - whatever you want to call it. I would not, as an individual, courtsey to the Queen, because I don't agree with the Monarchy. But, if I were representing others, I would respect the prevailing protocol (with gritted teeth).
PS seeing this has gotten me messed up feeling for the day I'm afraid. I already knew intuitively he was the only Jack O Lantern head of state to debase his office this way but, now I have the images to back up my suspicions.
Do you have some rubber bands I can borrow to snap my wrist with for some cheap aversion therapy when these pics cross my mind?
Mrs. Barack Hussein Obama showed no respect for the Queen when she put her arm around the Queen of England - And Barack acknowledges the Emperor who led a mass MURDER campaign on the Asian land mass in the 30's and 40's. Millions of innocent civilians died under his order as head of state.
I'm saying be polite but -- not necessary to grovel.
He's not a US citizen, he's not the POTUS, he's not Christian, he's not anything.
What is he?
USofA seems to have the same problem with this guy that England had with Henry VIII. He's there to sell you out and destroy the institutions that could challenge his masters.

One is a craven groveler. The others are heads of state.

Sheesh.

"Representing others" means representing THEIR ethos and culture.
I'm sick. The next president will have to punch another head of state in the neck to bring us out of this.

It could be that O'Bowa is asking the Emperor to check his head for ticks.
He can't seem to get it right. Look at Mrs. Cod's recent comment:
