England - The Most Violent, Gun Free Nation In Europe

"I don't need no stinking gun!"

Hate to say "We told ya so," but the Brits' self-inflicted predicament was entirely foreseeable. It is a shame that so many people are suffering from the actions of deluded politicians who have turned a nation into a game preserve for criminal predators.
From the UK Daily Mail:
Britain's violent crime record is worse than any other country in the European union, it has been revealed.

Official crime figures show the UK also has a worse rate for all types of violence than the U.S. and even South Africa - widely considered one of the world's most dangerous countries.

The figures comes on the day new Home Secretary Alan Johnson makes his first major speech on crime, promising to be tough on loutish behaviour.

The Tories said Labour had presided over a decade of spiralling violence.

In the decade following the party's election in 1997, the number of recorded violent attacks soared by 77 per cent to 1.158 million - or more than two every minute.

The figures, compiled from reports released by the European Commission and United Nations, also show:

The UK has the second highest overall crime rate in the EU.

It has a higher homicide rate than most of our western European neighbours, including France, Germany, Italy and Spain.

The UK has the fifth highest robbery rate in the EU.

It has the fourth highest burglary rate and the highest absolute number of burglaries in the EU, with double the number of offences than recorded in Germany and France.

But it is the naming of Britain as the most violent country in the EU that is most shocking. The analysis is based on the number of crimes per 100,000 residents.

In the UK, there are 2,034 offences per 100,000 people, way ahead of second-placed Austria with a rate of 1,677.
After the murderous rampage in Connecticut, watch for the same nonsense here.

And by the way, the 2011 violent crime rate in the US was 386 offenses per 100,000. The UK violent crime rate is over five times higher that that of the United State. And just to be fair, I tossed in 2.2 million American burglaries as the Brits seem to count this as a violent crime. Even so, our crime rate was still half the Brits (1,088 per 100,000).

How's that gun ban thing working out for ya?

I lived in the UK in the 1970s and went to school there. I returned in 2001 to clean out and sell my beloved aunt's home just outside London. The number of changes in England were staggering. In part, this was due to ill advised mass immigration of desperate refugees from all over the world, some of whom hail from violent cultures. Secondly, an abundance of government and ridiculous laws and restrictions made our time in England particularly unpleasant. I will not return.

Jane - sorry to hear that. So many Brits are disgusted with the way their country has changed and how immigrant populations have contributed to this.

'Round my part of the UK we have hardly any street mugging, virtually no car-crime (auto-theft) and domestic burglary is unheard of (except robbing student houses for multiple laptops when they are all out getting drunk).

Dunno whether this is because drug related crime is financed by shoplifting or because we are hideously mono-cultural (Oops, sorry, was that a hate crime?).

Banned - to tell the truth, the more I hear about these UN crime surveys, the less I am inclined to go along with them.

As in many smaller towns here across the pond, crime is relatively low. People who reside in larger metropolitan areas are not so fortunate. As immigrants and poverty level individuals tend to cluster in urban areas (where social services and public transportation are more readily available) you might expect that.

Wait, this can't be. It is in such disagreement with our respected geniuses in the media, academia and politics. How can this be? Could it be they all have shit for brains? Yea, guess so.

And WHY is no one asking where the authorities/police were to protect these children??? I mean after you take all the guns, how are we to rely on the "first line of defense" if they don't show up? or do anything useful? Who exactly do us unarmed suckers rely on????

A quote from the 'Daily Mail,' a Conservative paper of a 'Tea Party' persuasion dating from 2009 cannot be declared honest. The same paper would imply this government today (Conservative coalition) which they voted for, was successful in dealing with such crimes.

30,000 people and more are shot in the US each year. Around about 700 murders, half of which are domestic, occur in the UK (not England that is only one part of the UK).

Any American will tell of the joy of walking the streets of the UK without fear. Try it sometime.

Adulla - Actually the number of aggravated assaults with a firearm are much higher in the US. Of the 670,000+ agg. assaults in 2010, about 20% (137,000) were perpetrated with a firearm. The thing is, the Daily Mail is quoting a European Union report on violent crime, not just gun crime. The European Union is hardly a "conservative" source. I assume you are English, good for you - I enjoy the English. Now try reading the European Union crime report.

Here's the source - http://epp.eurostat.ec.europa.eu/statistics_explained/index.php/Crime_statistics.

Then go walk the streets of London yourself. I assume you are aware of the areas where you dare not poke your nose. Even though I am a retired LEO and carry a pistol, I also exercise the same discretion in my own city. Why get hassled?

Adulla - factoring in total crimes reported to the police in both countries, England and Wales compared to the US - the crime rate is more than twice as high as in America. England and Wales with a combined pop. of 55,240,000 with 4,338,604 totalcrimes reported in 2010; the US with a pop. of 308,745,538 and 10,329,135 crimes reported to the police. This is for both property and violent crimes.

There is no boasting here - in matters of crime everyone loses. I have personally witnessed the devastation of crime over the period of decades and there is no rejoicing in the fact that some entity is suffering more than you.

after the serial killer BTK was arrested, a friend and i got to chatting with a scottish film crew that was headed to wichita to make a documentary about his crime spree.

the female producer asked about the homicide rate in the town i live in, which has a population of around 350,000. i told her i believed it was around 30 in 2005.

she was incredulous. she lived in glasgow and told us that it was about twice the size of ours, and had 4 times the homicide rate-127 in 2002. she could not believe that a wild west town had that few killings.

she also related that most of these were stabbings and fueled by drugs and alcohol (no shit), and that the incidence of residential robberies was out of control. when asked if she thought allowing citizens to own firearms again in jolly old england would reduce the violent crimes, we had to about hold her up, as she nearly passed out.

seems euros and AMERICAN liberals are clones, blame and ban the instrument, try to understand and help the offender, as evidence of which i submit the superintendent of the scrathclyde police area (glasgow) comments from 2002 in which he called knives "offensive weapons". also chiming in on this was justice minister cathy jamieson who stated ‘Too many of these cases result when either the accused or the victim is drunk....I believe reforms to drinking laws now being considered will reduce this potentially fatal connection between over-indulging in alcohol and violent crime.'

you will NEVER hear a liberal say that arming yourself to defend yourself and your property will help to keep you from becoming a statistic.

to adullamite, i will redirect archie bunkers question he originally posed to his daughter gloria as she whined about gun violence, 'would it make you feel any better if they was pushed out a windows?'

jay son - right on. My county is about a half million and our homicide rate was 27 in 2008 and down to 14 last year.

The article is from 2009 but I live in London and doubt that little has changed.

Despite Newtown, I hope you hang on to your guns as a means of self-defence. The only people who have guns over here are criminals, some of our Police and some members of Clubs - the rest of us make do with a cricket bat behind the door,

Maybe it's best to ban the sale of 'assault weapons' like the one Lonzi and his mum had? I'm ANTI-repealing the ban on handguns in the UK but even I can't see a reason for keeping a semi-automatic machine gune (as is being reported over here) in the house. God bless you all.
