Where We're From

This is a fascinating map plotting the primary ethnic origins of every county in the US.

I wonder how American can be an ethnic group, I may be reading it wrong as the print is so small. I would question the accuracy of this map if that is what it says.

I could write something that would be interpreted as politically incorrect or racially insensitive, so I shall refrain. But it is an interesting map.

I wonder if they meant "Native American," or if the people there said "American, by gawd!" when they filled out the questionnaire? (I would!)

Sunny - the map is derived from US census bureau data so it is only as accurate as the number of people who bothered to fill it out correctly.

LL - you... politically incorrect? Insensitive??

Perish the thought!

Gorges - I just about chased the census lady take off my property when she showed up to ask all kinds of additional questions. She got real nervous when I answered, "What the hell business is it of yours?" said thanks and almost ran from my driveway.

The first census was taken in 1790 I believe. Some census takers reported being shot at.

Look at MA, solid purple - Irish. No wonder the Kennedy's always got elected.

Sig, my father used to say that if the Democrats put a jackass in a suit the Irish Americans would vote for him. Disclaimer: Our last name is Ahern, same as the Taoiseach who served from 97-08. If he's a relation its really distant.

Speaking for myself, I ditched all that "Erin Go Braugh" crap and other bilge from my mother's Dutch side (her family lived under "Pegleg Pete" Stuyvestant when he gave New York to the English). I'm an American, thats good enough for me.
