Bad Bad Leroy Brown

Jim Croce died in a plane crash in September, 1973. Back before I joined the Syracuse Police, I met Croce when I worked as a security cop at Syracuse University during a small concert he gave in 1970.  I was the only security there and I spoke to him and his manager just before the performance which was held on campus. It was pretty much a small, almost intimate concert in an auditorium with perhaps 100 to 150 attending.  His road manager was very nice. Jim Croce was very talented, shame that they died so young.

His wife/widow, Astrid, ran a bar in San Diego (Gaslamp District), called Croce's. It's still there but as I understand it, the bar is in other hands now.

Now I think about it, his widow's name is Ingrid. Sorry for the faux pas.

Jim Croce's music was never my style. It was the kind of stuff that if John Belushi heard you playing a Croce ditty on your guitar, he would grab the guitar and smash the crap out of it, and then say 'sorry.'

(An 'Animal House' scene).

Well, he did like to sing about big dumb fighting people. The other tune that comes to mind is Big Jim Walker. He could pick a good tune on the guitar.

So many have been taken in plane accidents. Stevie Ray, Buddy Holly, etc.

Sig: yeah, that scene. "I gave my love a cherry...." la la, la la.

I just wish it were me smashing that guitar.

My favorite was "Time in a Bottle".
