I have seen the future. We're screwed.

This story underscores the need for NUCLEAR power, at the very least to serve as a back-up for other forms of sustainable/renewable energy sources.

I have no problem with wind power, however it's difficult to get human beings to only turn on the electricity when the wind is blowing. Collecting and storing power can't be reliably done on any large scale yet.

Okay ....... but these people are not dependent on Middle East energy, and they have less to fear when the era of cheap oil comes to an end. I agree with LL that nuclear energy needs to be available as a backup to renewable sources. The most important thing is that we in the developed world get ourselves weaned off oil quickly - otherwise, yes "we're screwed". This island has taken a vital first step towards self-sufficiency/sustainability - I applaud their efforts.

I am interested in home level ways to use wind, solar, and hydro. Why? It helps cut the leash of depending totally on one source of power for the homestead. If I make more than I use, I sell it to the power company. If I need more power than I make, I pay for it. If something knocks the grid down, I still have lights and a cold fridge. I would back this up with a trifuel genset for emergency use. Using a small solar panel and battery to light the henhouse or shed without running power wires is an option.

But trying to run an entire community on these sources based on a central power grid is stupid, and this story proves it.

You know, after everything fails, they decide what they need is... more of the same. I may be fat, but stupid can only be fixed if people want it. I think I'll take a walk. I guess they will just spend more?

Now if someone could just figure out a way to make electricity out of politicians' promises, then we'd set for life.

The liberals are trying to turn us into a third world country, where the rule of law is whatever they wake up each morning and think it should be that day, based on who's in power that moment. Chaos and dysfunctional are the countries that embrace the tyranny of this type of governing. I keep saying, if these liberals want to change something, go change the pathetic countries that scam us for donations...constantly....that end up in the hands of tinpot dictators. And how about all these illegals that are demonstrating against strong US borders

It looks like mostly everyone is of the same mind - get off oil. Air, nuclear, solar, water, anything but oil. Well hold on!

While I agree that we need to get off FORIEGN oil, there is more than enough oil under American soil to power us for 100 years or so - if we're allowed to drill for it!!!!! And that's just what we know about!

And while that's only a short-term fix, what do you think could be discovered, developed or created in that amount of time to replace oil? Who knows?

And yes, I DO think we should be investing in nuclear energy - the technology and redundant safety processes make it well worth the investment. I think there is less opportunity for wind and solar, though there are niches that those two forms of energy could fill.

Oil is not the "demon". It is affordable and plentiful. We just need the moronic environmentalists to get the heck out of the way. Or if they want to continue to pursue their agenda, then we need to get people elected that won't listen to them, or won't become beholdened to them!

Well, still be using oil in massive quantity when our grand children are sitting around dreaming about unicorns.

These people got exactly what they deserve.

Where can I get my 100% government grant to put up my wind turbine? Is that next? I guess I'll pay for it in the long run through higher gas taxes...if we don't throw these "Liberal Fools" out on their asses!

It takes oil to lube the wind turbines-DUH.
It takes oil to make fake furs, the animal rights people want everyone to wear.
It takes oil to make plastic for everything worth a wit.
It takes oil to make capsules for their pills.
It takes oil to make nylon ropes for the boat tie down (Naval Ships).
It takes oil to make Panty Hose.
It takes oil for about everything.
Only the bottom 1/3rd of a barrel is for fuel (gas, diesel) (kerosene, var soil, turpentine, mineral spirits).
Don't for get we buy mass amounts of oil for 3rd world countries.
Remember Bubba had his Sec.of Energy, Bill Richardson-now Gov. New Mexico, go to OPEC with hat in hand to ask OPEC to raise the price of the barrel of oil, so the 3rd world countries could make some money to pay us back? What a lame excuse. Bubba helped Mark Rich (who had warehouses stock piled with barrels of oil) make a tun of money. Remember Mark Rich could not come back here (outlawed), so he had his ex-wife deliver a big fat Check to the Demos Party-Hillary excepted-CAN YOU SAY RICO-ACT?

Read that over at Delingpole's. Best laugh I've had in days.

They Say, I think bubba got more than a check from Mrs Rich. There used to be a pretty suggestive pic on the net, but after 5 pages of hilrod, I was getting ill so I gave up looking.

But yes, oil is used in the production or distribution of every product in existence.

Even electric cars will need plenty of petroleum products.

As far as clinton's being felony criminals, jeeez, that's the least of their offenses.

The problem is that the "green energy" market is being taken over by GE, which is an Obama crony. Lots of free advertising by NBC, a major American network. Payoff equals green contracts. For that reason alone I want them to fail.
