Irons In The Fire

This is an interesting POV from actor Jeremy Irons on the liberal nanny state that is being rammed down our throats by the left.

What really gets to me is that the nanny state mentality does not expect you to act responsibly on your own so it removes choices from you. Of course another word for choices is freedom.

But by the same means (legal coercion, AKA taxes) the nanny state forces us to pay the consequences for those who refuse to act responsibly. We are inundated with false claims for disability and SSI; medicaid and insurance fraud is rampant and still billions upon billion is funneled to political supporters of failing businesses.

There will be a reckoning and we will pay for that also.

I agree that there are many false claims on our tax dollars. But what about the legit claims. Should GM have too pay to have the road made whole not holey. Should all of us keep our infrastructure up? or just one of us? Are you better off having sewers, clean water, maybe clean air? Just because you live does not mean you have too be taxed though. But, business has a free ride in america. They don't pay but 1.87 % of up to 120,000, or so for SSI, you and I pay more then that, if injured, working for a business, should they not have to continue to pay you, but the powers too be, in business say no. The taxpayer then has to pick up the bill for bad management. And there is a lot of bad management in america, land of the slaves.

Roads are a bad example Jim. There are numerous county, state and federal taxes on gasoline (sales tax, excise tax, etc.) that contribute to good roads, or the money just goes into the bottomless pit that is government spending. If businesses get such a free ride in America then why have so many of them left the country, especially manufacturing jobs?

Look at the free ride the unions get from politicians in so many states and how the unions react when right to work laws are suggested. That's a form of support that doesn't get much attention from the press and the cost is passed on to consumers in higher prices, just like a union imposed sales tax.

I live in a village that was sued by a large corporation that for decades was raped by the village fathers. They finally sued for over assessment, successfully I might add, and us residents had to fork over a ton of money. The village used the business' property taxes to artificially lower residential property taxes.

It's a mixed bag, Jim, and it depends on who is in office. Look at what happened when all those car dealerships were closed under pressure from the Obama administration - a hugely disproportionate number of them were were owned by Republicans.

The power to tax is the power to destroy. That's why 90 million Americans are no longer in the workforce.
