One of these missed our house by 3 miles. They really do sound like a train as they pass.
I've had two go very closely right over various places I have lived, once as a kid. Ripped up parts of the town, and possibly nicked the home unless that was large debris. The other never hit, but I heard it go over. Was too tired to get in the tub, not sure I believe that story anyway, didn't have a basement. Yeah, it's loud. Though after it passes it gets really quiet. No tornadoes here though. After three near hits in Iowa City, per year... I'm glad for the loss, if I do miss the magnificent thunderstorms that can bring them.
WoFat - the weather guys said it was a micro-burst but I still think it was a twister that took down eleven trees in my back yard in 1998. I saw green lightning. Never want to see it again. And yes, while the gutters were being torn off my house it did sound like a freight train going by. Exactly like a train.
Doom - if it's a cast iron tub with porcelain coating, it will be quite strong - enough to keep you from being crushed if the roof caves in.Also a good place to be when the shooting starts...
