New Amsterdam?

When Frank Sinatra sang “New York, New York,” he may have been on to something.

A movement is afoot to split New York into two regions — upstate and downstate — to acknowledge the gaping philosophical differences and improve representation.

“I’ve lived in New York all my life, and upstate and downstate have two different philosophies of life,” said John Bergener, an Albany County resident and organizer of the two New Yorks effort. “And it seems like they’re always in conflict.”

Campaigns for “secession” or a 51st state have been on the rise since the 2012 presidential election — see California, Colorado and Maryland — but the New York movement has a twist.

Instead of splitting New York into two distinct states, advocates want one state controlled by two autonomous regional governments.

Story here.

The heck with that regional government nonsense. It sounds like joint custody crap. I wanna divorce and I keep the house and the twins.

The liberals won't allow more states because they'll all be new conservative states with two conservative senators and a congressional delegation that represents the people in 'fly over country'. More than anything, they fear a Senate that doesn't favor them.

A half measure is a mistake. If the people outside of new York City want liberty they had better proceed with a full divorce.

California thought about it, but we couldn't convince San Francisco to go with the south.

I don't think, strictly speaking, there is enough political power to enact this. I was pleased to see that, here in Utah, as we were just hitting the corruption of big-city politics nearing the power to subvert the rest of the state, or at least spread the corruption, our leaders took control. They split SLC into three parts and buried those parts into rural counties large enough to bury any power through numbers the city could dish out. I suppose, eventually, if SLC continues to grow... gotta keep an eye on it.

NYC needs the rest of NY, much as LA and San Fran need the rest of California, to let you go at this point. It would take becoming too expensive and too much of a headache to keep for them to ever agree to let you go now. It's about power, and they have it and they aren't going to share it back. Well, and money.

Doom - while I was in graduate school I was in a class where the issue of splitting NYC off into it's own state was discussed heavily. The time to do this was back in the fifties. NYC is too dependent now, it cannot survive on its own - like a parasite it cannot sustain itself and requires a host. Unfortunately it will kill the host eventually.
