No Surprise

It is not a mystery and it certainly isn't news.
New York is losing the people it can least afford to lose.

More people are leaving the New York region than any other major metropolitan area in the country.

More than 1 million people moved out of the New York area to another part of the country since 2010, a rate of 4.4 percent — the highest negative net migration rate among the nation’s large population centers, US Census records show.

The number of people leaving the region — which includes parts of New Jersey, Connecticut, the lower Hudson Valley and Long Island — in one year swelled from 187,034 in 2015 to 223,423 in 2016, while the number of international immigrants settling in the tri-state area dwindled from 181,551 to 160,324 over the same period, records show.

NY State Steps Up To The Plate, Almost

At first I thought "Yes!" as I read the initial blurb in a Facebook post. Then I read the news article - the NY Senate is Republican for the most part, but the State Assembly is controlled by Democrats. I doubt this bill will see the light of day. Probably the only way this bill gets out of the Assembly is if the statute were limited to inciting violence against queer/tranny cops.

ALBANY, N.Y. -- New legislation has passed in the state senate that seeks to make inciting violence against police officers a crime.

The New York State Senate has passed legislation sponsored by Senator Michael Nozzolio of LaFayette, that would establish the new crime of inciting violence against a police officer.

In response to recent violent crimes against police officers, deliberately inciting violence towards law enforcement is now a class D felony.

Senator Nozzolio "We will not tolerate the senseless and cowardly acts of violence against our police officers as they put their lives on the line every day to protect us. We have seen a surge in violent crimes against on-duty police officers so ensuring their safety has never been more important. I look forward to continuing to work with my colleagues to strengthen New York's criminal justice laws."

The bill will be sent to the Assembly.

In fact, the state set a national record for the number of lawmakers kicked out, or chased out of office since, 2012, the Center for Public Integrity, a good government group, found in a new study.

Fantasy Fortunes Are Exactly That, Fastasies

I am so sick of the gambling commercials that pollute the airwaves during football games. As the adage goes, "A fool and his money are soon parted," and the fantasy football crowd seems to be well represented in this respect.

Appaently the NYS Attorney General has also had his fill:

The New York State attorney general on Tuesday ordered the two biggest daily fantasy sports companies, DraftKings and FanDuel, to stop accepting bets in New York, saying that their games constituted illegal gambling under state law, according to people with knowledge of his investigation.

The cease-and-desist order by the attorney general, Eric T. Schneiderman, is a major blow to a multibillion-dollar industry that introduced sports betting to legions of young sports fans and has formed partnerships with many of the nation’s professional sports teams. Given the New York attorney general’s historic role as a consumer-protection advocate, legal experts say the action will most likely reverberate in other states where legislators and investigators are increasingly questioning whether the industry should operate unfettered by regulations that govern legalized gambling.

It Just Ain't Me

A corrupt NYS politician defends himself in court by maintaining that since everybody else is corrupt, it just isn't a crime anymore. Call it the "Me Too Defense."

It’s not just Sheldon Silver on trial in Manhattan federal court: It’s the whole system.

Silver’s defense is that corruption is the bread and butter of New York politics — so how can it be a crime?

The prosecution says Silver, for decades the state’s second-most-powerful official, “picked the people’s pocket to line his own.”

To which Silver’s team answers, So what?

“It’s impossible, absolutely impossible,” argued defense lawyer Steven Molo, “for a member of the Assembly to . . . do the job that a person in the Assembly does and not have some sort of conflict of interest.

“That may make you uncomfortable,” he added, “but that is the system New York has chosen, and it is not a crime.”

NY Legislature To Vote On Repeal Of The SAFE Act

New York State Republicans, at least some of them, are holding hostage the NYC rent control legislation that Gov. Andrew *spit* Cuomo really, really wants in order to repeal the unconstitutional SAFE Act passed in a shameful midnight session in January of 2013.

We need to get our act together to get the leg to pass this. Meanwhile, a 5-day extension was granted to protect renters from being evicted if the rent control law is not passed. This law affects 2 million renters in NYC. The SAFE Act diminishes the rights of 6 million gun owners. Who will get served?

New York Assembly Speaker Sheldon Silver, one of the most powerful politicians in the state, has been arrested and charged with taking $4 million in bribes.

Silver was taken into custody around 8am Thursday and later charged at Manhattan federal court.

Silver is a Democrat from Manhattan's Lower East Side and a longtime leader of the Assembly's Democratic majority. The arrest comes just a day after Silver shared the stage with Gov. Andrew Cuomo during his State of the State address.

This has been a loooong time coming. And this after NY Gov. Cuomo disbanded the Moreland Commission that was investigating political corruption. Nice one Andy.

Wonder who you were protecting. If Andy Cuomo were a condom, half the state would be pregnant.

Sheldon Silver is not the only one who has been locked up for corruption.

New Amsterdam?

When Frank Sinatra sang “New York, New York,” he may have been on to something.

A movement is afoot to split New York into two regions — upstate and downstate — to acknowledge the gaping philosophical differences and improve representation.

“I’ve lived in New York all my life, and upstate and downstate have two different philosophies of life,” said John Bergener, an Albany County resident and organizer of the two New Yorks effort. “And it seems like they’re always in conflict.”

Campaigns for “secession” or a 51st state have been on the rise since the 2012 presidential election — see California, Colorado and Maryland — but the New York movement has a twist.

Instead of splitting New York into two distinct states, advocates want one state controlled by two autonomous regional governments.

Gov. Cuomo's Economic Development Plans For NY

Gun manufacturers are moving out of New York.

Nearly 10 months since New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo (D.) signed the SAFE Act, opposition to the law continues to increase, multiple gun companies have announced plans to leave the state, and a key provision in the law has been quietly delayed.
American Tactical Imports (ATI) announced it would be leaving the state and will be investing $2.7 million in its new facility and creating 117 new jobs in South Carolina.

ATI’s announcement follows the decision of Kahr Arms to relocate to neighboring Pennsylvania, citing “uncertainty” about gun laws following the passage of the SAFE Act.

“One of our big concerns was, OK, the SAFE Act was passed in the middle of the night. You wake up the next morning and boom, that was it,” Kahr Vice President of Sales and Marketing Frank Harris told the Times Union in July. “It’s not just the SAFE Act, but the uncertainty.”

Meanwhile, Remington Arms is reportedly scouting locations in Tennessee for a new plant, following passage of the SAFE Act.
