CBS News took it upon themselves a few years ago to put together some scary stats regarding the possession of "heavy killer weapons that will probably be used to kill you" in the USA.
Of course NY is dead last at 3.3 guns per 1,000 residents.
10. Louisiana: 15.1 guns per 1,000 residents
9. Alaska: 15.2 guns per 1,000 residents
8. Nevada: 19.5 guns per 1,000 residents
7. Alabama: 20 guns per 1,000 residents
6. Idaho: 24.2 guns per 1,000 residents
5. Virginia: 30.1 guns per 1,000 residents
4. New Mexico: 40.5 guns per 1,000 residents
3. Arkansas: 41.6 guns per 1,000 residents
2. Washington, D.C.: 66.4 guns per 1,000 residents
1. Wyoming: 195.7 guns per 1,000 residents
Their list is based entirely on the 2013 census and the ATF's National Firearms Registration and Transfer Record. The ATF record - which doesn't include pistols - covers the sale and transfer of the following weapons:Below is an abbreviated list as the original is 44 States long.
- machine guns
- short-barreled rifles and shotguns,
- suppressors
- destructive devices like bombs and grenades
- concealable devices with the ability to discharge a shot through the energy of an explosive
- any firearm with a bore over half an inch that has not been determined to have a legitimate sporting use.

I guess parts of Wyoming can be scary.
But Washington, D.C?
Washington, D.C?
Really.... did they include the D.C. Marine Corps barracks armory?
This site shows the 10 states with the highest percentage of households that possess firearms.
- Wyoming 62.8%
- Montana 61.4%
- Alaska 60.6%
- South Dakota 59.9%
- Arkansas 58.3%
- West Virginia 57.9%
- Alabama 57.2%
- Idaho 56.8%
- Mississippi 54.3%
- North Dakota 54.3%
And now D.C. is no where in the mix.

I'm offended - highly offended - that Arizona didn't make the list.
LL - I was looking for Arizona also. But take heart, this was CBS at work.
That list is ONLY of NFA items. That did NOT include over the counter firearms which DO NOT require federal registration and tax stamps.
The actual numbers are MUCH higher.
Longbow - Right. Which is why D.C.'s #2 slot makes no sense to me. The second list is for non-NFA firearms. Only the percentages were given, not the guns per 100,000 population figures. Mebbe I go looking for those, no?
Yes, it is very common to see firearm carry in AZ.
I was surprised to see DC on any gun owner list.
And surprised to see Alaska so low on the guns per 1,000 residents. But I guess that's because there are so few thousands in Alaska, haha!
