OK, I give up!!

There have been rumors about some footage of me on the internet. I've tried my best to keep it under wraps, but perhaps Halloween is the best time to uncover a slightly disconcerting past.

During the 1970's I called England home, and I built a short but somewhat successful career as a club crooner. I operated under a variety of sobriquets including Lank Sterner, Bobby Calais, Boots Puffin, and finally Hurricane Smith. I made one Tonight Show appearance that somehow found an Internet home at YouTube.

Here it is. I no longer have the hair, but the suit is still a staple of my wardrobe. Ask Opie.

The lyrics are fabulous. Absolutely fabulous.

Thanks, Ope. But it's all in the delivery. Some voices make anything sound good.

You will call me a liar but I remember this song very well. It reminds me of scout camps, power cuts and high school discos; mind you, you didn't have much competition at the time, not until Punk arrived a bit later.

I always thought of myself as the original punk. Kind of a blend of Tony Orlando, Gilbert O' Sullivan and The Undertones.

What's amazing is that the saxaphone player is a spitting image of Rhod's kid brother Broderick.

I had to look close to make sure it wasn't him, but when you stuck your finger in his ear and he didn't stab you on stage, I knew he wasn't any of Rhod's kin.

Well, at least you didn't sing "Spanish Ladies" tonight.

ROFL about clearing his own throat!

I did notice that ear thing. Dude never knew how to protect his orifi.

DC, That was Harry Potts, one of the great sax men of the 50's and 60's. Harry passed on in 1983. He now operates a small off-license on the Isle of Wight.

He was the illegitimate son of Anthony Eden. You weren't far off with the knife suspicions. In 1979, he stabbed a bus driver at the Hammersmith Odeon who made the mistake of clearing his throat. Harry always preferred clearing his own throat.

Nickie, I just have to ask.. are you related to Doug Henning?

The resemblance is uncanny.

The polyester leisure suit has NEVER gone out of style. Wear it with pride, Nickie!

No relation, Sol. But then again, stylish guys are a kind of a fraternity.

Yup, LL. You said it! The darn things last forever.

DC, I remember when you and Broderick were pretty close, in spite of his stabbing problem.

Last we heard he was in Texas, looking to "set things right" with someone he knew from years past.

If he looks you up, let me know.

Sad to say; but when folks are going through our stuff a thousand years from now trying to figure out our culture, they will find a suit like this and maybe a Twinkie still in its wrapper.

The report will read; obviously some sort of religious use, perhaps a form of priestly attire.

Nickie, I come here to get serious about politics and I always leave laughing ... Thanks !

More like Light Breezes Smith. He make Leo Sayer seem like Johnny Cash.

I've a frock which, like your suit, is a staple of my wardrobe.

Try as I might not even Oxfam will accept it!

I too remember that song so well. Thanks for the memory.:)

TF, I checked, and it's definitely a garment without seams. It's not only knit, it's DOUBLE knit.

Anonymous said...

Thanks, Woody. Sometimes all we can do is laugh.

Anonymous said...

Rhod, I've sharpened up the macho act since then.

Subrosa, if Oxfam gave it back it means that the garment has probably been rejected by every Ethiopian nomad tribe. I need to see a picture of that dress.

Nickie, I remember the song and yourself well, it was my era. I thought you were excellent. Did you write much for other performers?
