During Desert Storm, the Iowa class battleships would send drones out for ranging information. Iraqis would try to surrender to the drones rather than face a salvo of 2,000 pound HE shells.
Yes, it's old technology, it's expensive, yada yada - but I still think we should keep them around.

Truly amazing. And the shell gets there long before the sound. My Dad told us about avoiding heavy Artillery in WWII. "You'd see a black dot in the sky, then wait a second or two to see if it was drifting right or left. If all it did was get bigger you ran like hell."
In a large part of the world, we're battling people in mud huts with automatic rifles. There's nothing wrong with older technology, as long as it works.
My brother was stationed on a DDE during a naval gunfire training exercise in the late sixties. A heavy cruiser with 8" guns was firing; he said even that was horrendous.
