Since 2011, humanities majors at UCLA are forcibly disassociated from classic Western European thinkers (mean old dead white guys) and force fed the Newspeak socialist, gender-sensitive, hand wringing BS that passes for history in liberal colleges. These colleges are poisoning the minds of our children; they are slam dunking future generations into useless automatons who cannot think outside the herd.
From The American Thinker:
From The American Thinker:
Where previously, undergrads would have to take one course studying Chaucer, two for Shakespeare, and one on Milton, a "revolt" by junior faculty forced "a mandate that all English majors take a total of three courses in the following four areas: Gender, Race, Ethnicity, Disability and Sexuality Studies; Imperial, Transnational, and Post-colonial Studies; genre studies, interdisciplinary studies, and critical theory; or creative writing."The implications are frightening. This trend will not reverse itself. People who get postgraduate degrees in gender studies or post-colonial exploitation are only able to find employment in liberal colleges, or else in establishments that require the placement of frozen hamburger patties on a hot surface.

Can we home school our college kids?
Actually, when we were homeschooling our kids (now aged 34 to 27) there was such a thing. I can't remeber it's name but it was a corresondance college which advertised itself as being for homeschoolers. Or send then to Hillsdale.
People who major in trangender sexuality studies, pediatric gynecology, ethnic studies, etc. can always find high paying executive jobs with the federal government.
Plumber, sure. But actual wood workers (cabinet makers), home electricians, small and large engine mechanics, basically any profession that can't be outsourced to India or China. Unless they can teleport the goods, failed items, or workers one way or the other, those professions can't be outsourced.
What's worse, as LL pointed out, is these are the fobs real money making industry can't use, so then end up messing up government.
Your title got my attention, and actually I agree with it. Plumbers are useful. My uncle is a plumber, and he's probably the most successful member of the whole family.
There's always going to be a need for plumbers.
Meanwhile, I love taking classes just for the sake of taking classes. I have a several rather useless degrees (not "gender studies," but still pretty useless), and I love it.
People ought to be able to get degrees in any-old-thing. They just shouldn't expect for it to earn them money.
God knows mine haven't, and that wasn't the idea.
Of course, the old Chaucer and Shakespeare classes mentioned nostalgically in the quote wouldn't have earned me any money, either.
If I ever feel the need to earn the big bucks, I'll go be a plumber.
Katy, the problem I have is that 3/4's of education, I mean higher ed, is subsidized. It comes down to fair share and making sure the markets, or individuals, pay it. I don't care if you have a ph. d. in flying kites, as long as you pay for it whole hog. You might not even do that at Harvard. They do allow some peasants in, if they are "liberal" enough, so long as someone else pays.
As for Chaucer, Shakespeare, and such... while they did not increase function, they did create social cohesion. Not the best of it, but a starting point for most Westerners. Without culture, and some... commonality, we might as well all be foreigners to each other. That doesn't work out in the long term, or even short term at some tipping point. Western Civ is priceless, and nearly lost.
May massive numbers of obama voters find themselves massively UnEmployable for a massive number of years.
Doom: I think I agree. The cost of the education is not worth it to the taxpayer and it's not worth it in most cases to the person going into debt for the education.
I had the luxury of being able tow rite checks for my tuition while getting my kite-flying degrees.
The indoctrination is almost complete.
