Hey Obama, Who's Freddy?

Is it possible? Did we miss one? With all the Marxists dug out from the very public -- yet very opaque -- story of President Barack Obama's life, could there be room for one more, hiding in plain sight on page 24 of Dreams from My Father?
A Japanese-American man who called himself Freddy and ran a small market near our house would save us the choicest cuts of aku for sashimi and give me rice candy with edible wrappers.
Who's Freddy?

I nominate the late Wilfred Mitsuji Oka, former proprietor of the Corner Liquor Store in Honolulu's Chinatown.

Friends may protest that the late Mr. Oka went by "Mits," not Freddy -- but Obama disguised the names of many of the people depicted in his book. For instance, the "Frank" in Dreams from My Father is card-carrying Communist Party member Frank Marshall Davis, who mentored the young Obama in Honolulu for several years after Obama's return from Indonesia and until Obama left Hawaii to attend Occidental College in Los Angeles.

In addition to being "a Japanese-American man [who] ran a small market near [Obama's] house," Oka was sports editor of the Honolulu Record -- a weekly newspaper published by the ILWU (Longshoremen's Union) from 1948 to 1958. Frank Marshall Davis authored a column called "Frank-ly Speaking." The Record's editor was Communist ex-spy Koji Ariyoshi.

Ariyoshi, ILWU President Jack Hall, and five other Communists charged with Smith Act violations became known as the "Honolulu Seven"-- convicted in 1953 of advocating the overthrow of the United States government by force and violence. Mits Oka was identified, along with Davis, as a Communist, and he was among the "reluctant 39" -- individuals who refused to testify before April, 1950 House Un-American Activities Committee hearings on Communist influence in the ILWU in Hawaii.

Charged with contempt of Congress, Mits Oka and the other reluctant witnesses were acquitted in January, 1951 -- but not before Oka's stance got him booted out of his position as Hawaii Democratic Party Central Committee Secretary and replaced by some guy named Dan Inouye.

The Honolulu Seven convictions were overturned in January 1958 after the U.S. Supreme Court's 1957 Yates decision recognized the legality of "advocacy and teaching of forcible overthrow as an abstract principle" and held that the Smith Act could prohibit only "advocacy and teaching of concrete action for the forcible overthrow of the Government." With its editor and his comrades safe, the Honolulu Record folded just six months later.

Because the U.S. and Soviet Union were allies during WWII, Ariyoshi had been able to join U.S. military intelligence from Manzanar War Relocation Camp in 1942 as an open Communist. As an intelligence officer, Ariyoshi was assigned as U.S. liaison to Mao Zedong's forces in Yenan, China during 1944 and 1945. He worked personally with Mao, Chou En-lai, and other top Chinese Communists -- a story he recounts in his memoir, From Kona to Yenan.

Immediately after the war, Ariyoshi worked in China and then New York City with accused "Amerasia" spy John S. Service and Ed Rohrbough -- who would become business manager of the Honolulu Record -- in an effort to steer U.S. policy towards the Reds and against the Nationalists. Rohrbough had edited a U.S. Office of War Information newspaper in Fukien, China during the war.

As advertised in the Record, the Corner Liquor Store was located at 1042 Bethel Street, at the corner of Hotel Street. Oka's store stayed at that address until plans arose to redevelop his block into the Chinatown Gateway Plaza apartment tower. But he didn't move far. In 1970, the Corner Liquor Store relocated to 1024 Nuuanu -- one block away from the Bethel location. In 1977 -- two years before Obama left Honolulu -- Oka would move around the corner to 15 N. King St. In addition to the business listing for the Corner Liquor Store, the Oahu telephone books each year carried personal telephone listings for Oka at his store's address.

All of these locations are about one and a half miles from the Punahou Circle apartment Obama shared with his grandparents Stanley and Madelyn Dunham at 1617 S Beretania St.

Now it gets interesting.

Still "too young to know that I needed a race," as he describes himself in Dreams, Obama was sent back from Indonesia in 1969 or '70. Gramps Stanley Dunham began a bizarre project which involved introducing Obama to Frank Marshall Davis and making secret visits to Chinatown's disreputable Smith Street bars -- located one block away from Oka's Corner Liquor Store. Obama describes the "excitement" of these visits in Dreams, page 77-78:

"Don't tell your grandmother," he would say with a wink, and we'd walk past hard-faced, soft-bodied streetwalkers into a small, dark bar with a jukebox and a couple of pool tables. Nobody seemed to mind that Gramps was the only white man in the place, or that I was the only eleven-or twelve year old. Some of the men leaning across the bar would wave at us, and the bartender, a big, light skinned woman with bare, fleshy arms, would bring a Scotch for Gramps and a Coke for me. If nobody else was playing at the tables, Gramps would spot me a few balls and teach me the game, but usually I would sit at the bar, my legs dangling from the high stool, blowing bubbles into my drink and looking at the pornographic art on the walls -- the phosphorescent women on animal skins, the Disney characters in compromising positions. If he was around, a man named Rodney with a wide-brimmed hat would stop by to say hello. ..."

Frank Marshall Davis too, described adventures on Smith Street at "The Green Goose," a bar "operated by one of my friends." Group sex and voyeurism at the Green Goose fill two pages in his pseudonymous porno book, Sex Rebel: Black (Memoirs of a Gash Gourmet), published just before Obama returned from Indonesia.

Returning from Hawaii in 1948, Communist Party leader Paul Robeson encouraged Frank and his then-wife Helen Davis to relocate from Chicago. Historian John Tidwell writes in Davis's memoir, Livin' the Blues:

For [Robeson,] Hawaii contained a veritable "lesson in racial matters to be learned[,]" one that could "speed democracy in the United States," if Hawaii were to be admitted to the Union as a state."

In his Honolulu Record columns, Davis worked to convince anybody who would listen that hapa Hawaii really was a segregated society. He derided Hawaii's black "racial exiles" who escaped the mainland and were able to forget about race while achieving personal success.

The Communist ex-spy Ariyoshi died of cancer in 1976 after helping found the U.H. Manoa Ethnic Studies Department -- the source of the Akaka Bill and lesser efforts to divide Hawaii into dependent "communities" to be "organized" in order to utilize artificially created divisions as an excuse for Hawaiian political operators to grab power, land, and money.

Oka, who passed away in July, 2009 at the age of 97, also remained politically active nearly to the end. Oka in 2003 backed "Downwind Productions," a Honolulu website and media enterprise based on the historical relativist model, teaching that "[o]ur thousand stories replace their history." Just as Obama decided that he "needed a race," Downwind requires visitors to choose a race in order to enter its "Historic Waikiki" website through portals labeled "kanaka maoli," "kamaaina," or "haole".

Below the portals is a quote from Italian Communist Party co-founder Antonio Gramsci. While Obama's associates seem to have written their memoirs at the end of their lives, Gramsci sums up Obama's likely motivation in writing two memoirs before living his life (emphasis added):
[T]he consciousness of what one really is ... is "knowing thyself" as a product of the historical process to date which has deposited in you an infinity of traces, without leaving an inventory. It is therefore imperative at the outset to compile such an inventory

I remember a song from the dim and distant past by the Beatles. The lyrics went like this, "But if you go carrying pictures of Chairman Mao, you ain't gonna make it with anyone anyhow..."

Today - the person with the fixation on Mao and other utopian communists (all of whom failed miserably and drove their respective countries into the mud) - is our leader, Barack Hussein Obama.

His background, his mentors, his heros were all communists - or complete racist whack jobs like Rev. Jeremiah Wright. Nothing to be proud of in an average citizen. For a president, it's unthinkable.

But there he sits in the White House for 3 more years.

Why do you post that Frank Marshall Davis was Obama’s “mentor”? Because conservative firebrand Cliff Kincaid said so? "Dreams From My Father" belies that myth.

Although Obama's book indicates "Frank" was a family friend who offered him advice on racial issues, Obama wrote that Davis "fell short" and his views were "incurable." Obama did not even visit Davis for three years before going to college. Obama's book proves that Obama did not consider Davis to be a "wise and trusted counselor," which is the standard definition of "mentor." They are mutually exclusive. By what creative definition can Davis be considered his "mentor"?

Once again, where is the EVIDENCE that Obama considered him to be a "wise & trusted counselor," which is the definition of "mentor." You can credit or discredit "Dreams," but what other evidence do you have to support THIS claim?

By exaggerating evidence that Davis advised Obama, yet ignoring evidence from the same source that Obama did NOT Frank to be a wise and trusted advisor, those who claim Davis was Obama's "mentor" are as dishonest as ex-D.A. Mike Nifong. The "Nifong Syndrome" is the stacking of evidence by ignoring evidence that does not fit one's agenda.

By portraying Davis as Obama's mentor, despite conclusive evidence to the contrary, fraudulent "opposition research" by Cliff Kincaid and others permeates the blogosphere. Such rhetorical deception was highlighted in the story of Alice's adventures in "Through The Looking-Glass,"

"When I use a word," Humpty Dumpty said in rather a scornful tone. "It means just what I choose it to mean - neither more or less."
"The question is," said Alice, "whether you can make words mean so many different things."
"The question is," said Humpty Dumpty, "which is to be master - that's all."

Even Wikipedia claims that Frank Marshall Davis was a "decisive influence" in helping Obama to find his present identity as an African-American and was a political influence. When a person influences the other person in two important and major areas of one's life that means that Frank was indeed a mentor to Obama.

"Even Wikipedia claims that Frank Marshall Davis was a "decisive influence" in helping Obama to find his present identity as an African-American and was a political influence."

Untrue. Wikipedia makes neither claim.

Wikipedia reports Gerald Horne's claim that Davis was "was a "decisive influence" in helping Obama to find his present identity as an African-American." This is Horne's claim, not Wikipedia's.

Wikipedia also reports Jerome Corsi's "The Obama Nation" claim that Davis was a "political influence" on Obama, but also reports that the Obama campaign "disputes claims made about the nature of their relationship." This was Corsi's claim, not Wikipedia's.

Because the burden of proof is ALWAYS upon the accuser, what is your evidence that Obama considered Davis to be a "wise and trusted counselor"?

Your statement "When a person influences the other person in two important and major areas of one's life that means that Frank was indeed a mentor to Obama" does not meet the standard definition of "mentor," because TRUST is a necessary (but not sufficient)
condition for mentorship. See dictionary.com.
Less tap-dancing please. As they say on CSI: "Follow the evidence." Where is your evidence to support your claims?

Asking for evidence constitutes "absurd objections"? The canons of responsible journalism require evidence for every claim.

Thanks, Teresa, for confirming my post about Wikipedia, which makes neither claim, as misrepresented above. It only reports claims by others such as Horne and Corsi. It does not comment on their veracity.

By portraying Davis as Obama's mentor, despite conclusive evidence to the contrary, fraudulent "opposition research" by Cliff Kincaid and others permeates the blogosphere. Their travesty of journalistic ethics demonstrates that they are unreliable sources of information on the Davis-Obama relationship. As the epitome of contemporary propaganda, Cliff Kincaid may be a worthy successor to Reich Minister Joseph Goebbels.

As a retired Air Force Intelligence Officer with specific training in Deception Analysis by the C.I.A. in 1989, I am researching the persistence of disinformation in the blogosphere. I am familiar with disinformation campaigns, including Pope Gregory's misrepresentation of Mary Magdalene, Russian and German misrepresentation of Judaism, Operation Fortitude protecting the D-Day invasion, Operation Left Hook protecting the coalition drive into Kuwait, and the misrepresentation of the Iraqi threat this century.

This disinformation campaign fits the pattern epitomized by "The Protocols of the Elders of Zion," where a target is smeared through deliberate misrepresentation. Relying on unsubstantiated claims of mentorship to implicate Obama makes no more sense than relying on Curveball's unsubstantiated claims of mobile weapons labs to implicate Iraq.

Once again, Teresa, I must thank you for proving my point regarding the definition of "mentor." Both definitions you posted require trust. Obama's book said Davis "fell short" and his views were "incurable," which indicates a LACK of trust.

Where is your evidence that "One commie taught the other how to be a "good" and "better" commie? Speculation is not evidence. In fact, according to Professor Tidwell, cited by AIM as an expert on the life and writings of Davis, there is NO EVIDENCE that Davis taught Obama anything about communism. Follow the evidence!

NICKI GOOMBA SAID "Not a peep, huh? I wonder why. Hmmm. I wonder why."

Glad both of you asked these questions, because I can kill two birds with one stone.

Max did not answer because I have provided irrefutable evidence of disinformation against the Obama-Davis relationship spearheaded by Cliff Kincaid's so-called "Accuracy In Media" (AIM).

The AIM disinformation campaign consisted of a series of small lies fabricated to support the big lie that "His values, passed on to Obama, were those of a communist agent who pledged allegiance to Stalin" (see http://www.aim.org/aim-column/media-excuse-obamas-false-advertising). A painstakingly documented analysis of Kincaid's falsehoods is posted as "specific misrepresentation" at http://my.barackobama.com/page/community/post/Kaleokualoha/gGxdvX.

I invite any person of integrity to refute my evidence against his body of lies. If he had authentic evidence of Davis's radical influence, he would not need to fabricate such evidence.

It is indeed regrettable that so many honest people have been hoodwinked by Kincaid's ironically named "Accuracy In Media" (AIM). Fraudulent memes, unwittingly propagated by well-intentioned bloggers, have spread throughout the blogosphere, which proves the effectiveness of viral disinformation campaigns. Even the title of Kincaid's initial attack, "Obama's Communist Mentor," is itself a masterful deception. Through the "fallacy of equivocation*," it implies three enduring falsehoods:

- That Davis was an avowed or known communist who advocated collectivist principles. The evidence, however, indicates that Davis was a closet communist who never advocated communism.

- That Davis had a continuing mentorship with teenage Obama, "almost like a son." Evidence, however, indicates that Davis was an occasionally visited family friend whom Obama did not even see for three years before college.

- That Davis taught communism to young Obama. The evidence, however, indicates that although Davis offered advice on racial issues, Obama did not even trust that advice.

(*The "fallacy of equivocation" is the misleading use of a term with more than one meaning or sense, by glossing over which meaning is intended at a particular time. It occurs when an equivocal word or phrase makes an unsound argument appear sound. It deceives through ambiguity.)

This misrepresentation of Frank as Obama's mentor was only the first deceptive step in building a house of cards against Obama. Their scam misrepresented Frank as a virtual Dr. Frank-enstein who created a Marxist Obama. In doing so, opponents may have thought they had a silver bullet. After all, who would bother to defend an obscure dead black poet? The Dead Poets Society? Not likely, so the scam developed. Slander ensued.

Through innuendo, half-truths and outright fabrication, Obama’s opponents deliberately misrepresented a casual family friendship as political indoctrination sessions, or worse. In their rush to malign Obama, their scam transformed the legacy of a relatively obscure leftist poet into a “Stalinist agent” who corrupted Obama’s values. Slander and libel were their tools of their trade, because truth was irrelevant. Their perverted ethics find nothing wrong with such lies. Destroying Davis’s reputation was collateral damage. Cliff Kincaid may rationalize his deceit as a Leo Straussian "noble lie," but in reality it is a dishonorable attack.

I didn't ask for a lecture on Kincaid or another salvo of boring, tendentious quotations. Your weakness, among others is that you think a ream of familiar quotations lends weight to your ponfitifications. I also couldn't care less about Kincaid or Davis, or your links.

You're obviously obsessed with this issue, and I'd like to know why. There's more to your fetish about an obscure individual like Davis, and the tangential relationship he had with Obama than clarity in the record.

Rather than rummage through your tedious lectures and find the lines, an Intel officer would easily understand what I meant by the difference between misinformation and disinformation...and also the fine point of misrepresentation. Was Kincaid's error disinformation or misinformation or simple misrepresentation?

Code of ethics in journalism? Every professional group which thinks of itself as a defender of the public good moralizes its mission in a code of some sort. Investigative Journalism, if it's anything, is the elaboration of speculation, which is nothting more than the development of a hypothesis.

If you regard yourself as a journalist AND an Intel "officer" then you should understand that opinion is not necessarily falsehood, the facts of an issue are not necessarily the truth of an issue, and information is not necessarily knowledge. Your fog index is too high for you to be convincing.

I have no axe to grind here. Obama is the man he is for reasons which might have nothing to do with Davis, but you haven't come clean either.

I have nothing more to say.

I thought I made it clear that Kincaid's "error" was part of a disinformation campaign, which I documented and invited skeptics to refute in my previous post. Cliff Kincaid and his colleagues designed an elaborate scam. Instead of fake jewelry, they fake opposition research.

Unlike Kincaid and many bloggers, however, I do not pretend to be a journalist. I know, however, that misrepresenting speculation or opinion as fact, as Kincaid and others have done, is a violation of the Code of Ethics.

My personal motivation is irrelevant to the facts of the issue, which should be examined on their own merit. If you had taken the time to actually read the links, however, you would have discovered that Frank Marshall Davis was my father.

YOU WROTE: Why there would be a "disinformation campaign" against him is the story, not the specifics or front men involved.

RESPONSE: The reason for the disinformation campaign is obvious: To smear Obama through deceptive guilt-by-association, as epitomized by AIM's claim (posted above) that "His values, passed on to Obama, were those of a communist agent who pledged allegiance to Stalin" (see http://www.aim.org/aim-column/media-excuse-obamas-false-advertising). This is fully covered in the link which you declined to read.

YOU WROTE: This should have interested a former Intel man...and on that subject, Intel guys, former or not, don't expose themselvess publically on a blog where your ISP can be hacked, or you first name derived from info on Wiki. provided along with a Wiki entry.

RESPONSE: Your post reveals your ignorance of the Intelligence Community. Only a VERY small percentage of military intelligence officers are involved in clandestine activities. For the vast majority, our involvement with organizations like the Defense Intelligence Agency is unclassified and open to public scrutiny. I retired from the Air Force in 1993, and never even ventured into the blogosphere until 2008 when I learned of my father's history with Barack Obama.

YOU WROTE: So many questions....

RESPONSE: Kincaid's researcher Max Friedman also had questions, which I answered for him in the the pajamasmedia post linked above. If your questions have not been covered in the references, I will will be happy to answer any relevant questions you may have.

Here's another quote, which is perfectly legitimate fair use of "intellectual property" when attributed, and sources in the public domain:

"The first duty of a man is the seeking after and the investigation of truth."
- Cicero (106 BC - 43 BC)

Okay, Mark, your father was a minor, moderately-talented figure in the hard leftist, bigoted, axe-grinding, race-conscious cognoscenti of the mid twentieth century....of which there were many, and they've all faded into irrelevance. Happy now?

Would that you were as talented.

True. I wish that I was as talented.
