A poem rooted in the abolitionist movement. I remember arguing this stanza with a female hippie a long time ago who thought it was, as they think now, about American brutality in trying to impose our way of life on others.
That's because public schools haven't 'taught' in a long time. They've been too busy indoctrinating as evidenced by people such as the stupid female hippie.
The Battle Hymn of the Republic - a reworked version of the John Brown song:
"He captured Harper’s Ferry, with his nineteen men so few,
And frightened "Old Virginny" till she trembled thru and thru;
They hung him for a traitor, they themselves the traitor crew,
But his soul is marching on."
John Brown was a regular in this area as it was the terminus of the underground railway. His raid on Harper's Ferry was largely planned in this town and many of the lads in the raid came from here. A few years ago I helped stage a play about those times and the cast included descendants of the original folks involved.
As a wee boy I always thought the song was about my great-gandpa as his name was John Brown.

DC, I wondered the same thing. It's probably the 22nd Rhode Island Irregulars. Nick said he was an irregular drummer boy in the Civil War.
Whatever your religious leanings, you'd have to be completely ignorant to not see that the struggle between good an evil is a central theme on this plant as far as humans go, for as long as humans have been here.
Good need not equate to Godliness and Evil need not equate to the Devil for it to exist and deserve to be crushed. It never will be of course, but hey, let's not give Evil carte blanc.
From the Book of Mormon, Moroni 7:12-13 teaches:
Wherefore, all things which are good cometh of God; and that which is evil cometh of the devil; for the devil is an enemy unto God, and fighteth against him continually, and inviteth and enticeth to sin, and to do that which is evil continually. But behold, that which is of God inviteth and enticeth to do good continually; wherefore, every thing which inviteth and enticeth to do good, and to love God, and to serve him, is inspired of God.
