Employer told not to post advert for 'reliable' workers because it discriminates against 'unreliable' applicants

By Daily Mail Reporter

A job centre has been slammed for refusing to display an advert for a 'reliable workers' - because it discriminated against unreliable applicants.

Recruitment boss Nicole Mamo, 48, tried to post an advert for a £5.80-an-hour domestic cleaner on her local Jobcentre Plus website.

She ended the job offer by saying that any applicants for the post 'must be very reliable and hard-working'.

But when Ms Mamo called the Jobcentre Plus in Thetford, Norfolk, the following day she was told that her advert would not be displayed.

Nicole Mamo, director of Devonwood Recruitment was stunned when a job centre in Thetford, Norfolk, said she could not include the phrase 'reliable and hard working' in her advert
A Jobcentre Plus worker claimed that the word 'reliable' meant they could be sued for discriminating against unreliable workers.

The mother-of-two from Hertfordshire today slammed the situation as 'ridiculous'.

She said: 'I placed the advert on the website and when I phoned up to check I was told it hadn't been displayed in the job centre itself.

The Job Centre in Thetford, Norfolk, said the advert discriminated against unreliable people.

'She said "oh we can't put that advert on the job points".

'She said it was because they could have cases against them for discriminating against unreliable people.

'I laughed because I thought that was crazy. We supply the NHS with staff so it's very important for the patients that we have reliable workers.

'We find jobs for hundreds of temporary staff every week and are proud of our workers but our reputation is at stake if they aren't reliable.

'We are taking people off the dole and finding them jobs so not displaying the advert just seems absolutely ridiculous to me.'

Nicole, who runs Devonwood recruitment agency and employs eight people, placed her advert on the Thetford Jobcentre Plus website on January 21 this year.

The job offer, which cost nothing to display, read: 'Domestic cleaner required immediately. A variety of different shifts available. Must be fluent in written and spoken English for health and safety reasons. Previous experience preferred. Training will be provided. Must be very reliable and hard-working.'

The following day Nicole phoned Thetford Jobcentre Plus and was told by a woman that her advert could not be displayed.

The 'offensive' advert which Job Centre Plus allowed on the website but not on the instore display

She claimed that the job centre could be sued by unreliable people if they placed the advert on their 'job points' but told Nicole it will remain on their website.

Aw, ya know, equality and equal outcomes regardless of how much the person SUCKS at what they do is the answer for all these Libs/ Labour morons. This is ludicrous. This lady is the person who is going to be paying the worker. She has a right to demand that the worker be reliable.

Teresa, don't talk about rights in the UK. The government decides who has rights and who doesn't.

So I guess this means that the lazy, dumb guy gets as much from the free-money pot as the hard working smart guy? Perfect.

I may be stupid and lazy, but at east I got big hands!

Just when you think it can't get any weirder...

Ask Tony Martin about rights...As far as equal outcomes, it happens in this country too. Try working for the government. After you get by the EEO poker game, you have to check logic at the door. Then ambition and lastly pride. Better not have any pride in your work. At that point you are an automaton. The best you can do is to get out before it's too late.

God forbid there should be any standards to uphold. The left is getting me really pissed off!

Does this mean that in the UK you cannot get fired for unreliable work? If reliability cannot be a criterion for employment, then unreliability cannot be a criterion for losing a job. I would assume that I can get a job and never show up for work, or show up occasionally and sit on my arse all day, and collect my paycheck at the end of the week.

It's difficult to get fired a lot of European countries. You'd have to kill someone in some. I am surprised they get anything done there.

Kid, you forgot Obama.

RWL... "lazy AND dumb"?? You've got a future in government, my friend.

The Brits are in such trouble. When the Archbishop of Canterbury suggests the country should accept some tenents of Sharia law...very sad.

Wierder... trust me. It can get a whole lot weirder and probably will.

Right Guy... If you are hard-working, creative, and determined to reach the top through hard work, avoid government work. Your pride will be crushed by little people.

And Texlahoma... I would have said it reigns royally. Either way, you are right!

Velcro... Standards are mean and unfair. That's what our inspired leaders tell us.

So my ads can't say "no fat chicks" anymore?

Arby, that sounds like a typical day at my local DMV.

Right Guy... That's why it's also hard to find a job opening in Europe. You'd be amazed how many jobs are under-the-table to avoid all this crap.

Maggie, I couldn't believe it when he said it. Prat.

And to think that at one time the U.K. was one of (if not The) most powerful and influential nations on the face of this Earth!

UFB!

Hey, in Sheffield, they've eliminated the word "school" at a new...school....because it has "negative connotations". (I have an old link to the Guardian article here, and might put it up).

Remember the character, invented by an Englishman, who could believe six impossible things before breakfast?

Too late. I already work there. Trying to get out though.

She recruits healthcare workers and can't demand they be reliable? Now we know what to expect with Obamacare; unreliable healthcare staff coming soon to a hospital near you.

Of all the absurd rules/practices, this one has to be near the top.

Perhaps if you put an ad in a paper in the UK advertising "lazy, litigious, slacker wants job - must pay over $100K - work from home in spare time." That way if you weren't hired, you could sue every company whose CEO MAY have read the ad for not hiring you.

We must be fair Nickie.

Now let's think ...... this will be some dipstick who has misinterpreted some "guidance" in a memo and gone over the top with PC-ness. It's hardly a story. It's not representative of anything. My local newspaper is full of ads asking for reliable people - one of the basic requirements for employment. :S

If GNN must bash the UK at least use something a bit more substantial than this ;)

Usually indicative of a rotting substance, decomposing organic material, something returning to its constituent components.

And it usually gives off quite a stench.

I swear, Nickie, (often), you couldn't make these interfering, pc government dickwads up!

No doubt an "unreliable", trans-gender, ethnic minority, anti-Christian, burkha-clad worker in a wheelchair would actually be sent for the job interview because of Labour's, (Batty Hatty Harpy's), "positive" discrimination. - WTF!

Anyone in their right mind knows there is no such THING - all discrimination is wrong.

Positions used to be, and still should be awarded on merit - but NOT in the crazy, Far-Left world of commie Labour!

Norfolk is particularly bad for this insidious form of madness, by the way!
