Let's Show Some LOVE for the US Congress!

There are some cynical liberals who believe that GNN is less than supportive of the United States Congress. Nothing could be farther from the truth and as a sign of that support, I (with others) wish to put forward a new Constitutional Amendment that has been too long coming.

Proposed 28th Amendment to the United States Constitution:

"Congress shall make no law that applies to the citizens of the United Statesthat does not apply equally to the Senators and/or Representatives; and, Congress shall make no law that applies to the Senators and/or Representatives that does not apply equally to the citizens of the United States".

I'm not holding my breath for passage, however it would do a few things that I believe would benefit the nation as a whole.

* Remove legislative immunity-  Congressional representatives would be subject to the law the same way as every other citizen while the legislature is in session.

* Remove the Social Security exemption- Congressional representatives would be subject to contributing to the Social Security System just the same as every federal employee.

* Repeal the Congressional Retirement Program- At present, members of congress can retire with full pay after serving one term. They should be subject to the same retirement program as other federal employees.

* Remove the Congressional Healthcare Program- Congress would be subject to the same single payer healthcare they're trying to ram down our throats. (note: many are millionaires and will simply pay out of pocket rather than standing in long lines to receive sub-standard care)

This will allow our representatives to feel closer to We The People.

It's long overdue. You remember way back when they passed the ethics in government act and exempted themselves from it?

You have my vote.

Surely, LL, you don't expect our communist alien overlords to live by the same standards and rules as us humans?

LSP - Sadly, I know they will never lower themselves to the level of 'the great unwashed', but it would be a litmus test for true change...a Congress which sets itself AMONG the people it governs rather than OVER them.

According to the Heritage Foundation:

"American businesses spend over half a trillion dollars each year complying with federal regulations and mandates from which Congress is largely exempt."

Every congressional candidate must be forced into accepting that all exemptions for Congress are to be eliminated. They are not above the laws which are imposed on us. They are our representatives, not our rulers and they need to have that made clear to them.

I got that 28th Amendment in an email last week. I'm all for it!

I'm in favor of tough(er) love, LL, and I think you are too.

A 28th certainly would get my nod of approval.

It is time congress started viewing themselves as our equals and not our OVERLORDS!

Rational Nation USA - Is there something wrong with the term "public servant"? Isn't that what it's supposed to be, not the other way around?

This should be the platform for a Conservative Party.

I like that a lot.

I would certainly support that amendment. And while term limits can be a two-edged sword, too many of our "public servants" see it as a career, a job to go to in the morning (or Christmas eve). We need something to put people from the REAL world back in there.
