Who's Going To Blink This Time?

Russia’s most senior military officer said Thursday that Moscow would pre-emptively strike and destroy U.S.-led NATO missile defense sites in Eastern Europe if talks with Washington about the developing system continue to stall.

“A decision to use destructive force pre-emptively will be taken if the situation worsens,” Russian Chief of General Staff Nikolai Makarov said at an international missile defense conference in Moscow attended by senior U.S. and NATO officials.

NATO insists that their proposed anti-ballistic missile system is designed to only knock down Iranian missiles aimed at Europe.

Ellen Tauscher, the U.S. special envoy for strategic stability and missile defense, insisted the talks about NATO plans for a missile defense system using ground-based interceptor missiles stationed in Poland, Romania and Turkey were not stalemated.

But she acknowledged Wednesday that the recent elections in Russia and the upcoming elections in the U.S. make it “pretty clear that this is a year in which we’re probably not going to achieve any sort of a breakthrough.”

She reiterated that the U.S.-built system, still in development, is being designed to shoot down Iranian intermediate-range missiles aimed at Europe, not Russian intercontinental ballistic missiles (ICBMs).

Russia insists that that same system can take out their intercontinental ballistic missiles which, coinkydink, are also aimed at Europe.

Most likely the NATO system can; and if it can't, it darn well should.

An ICBM may have a higher altitude at it's flight apogee and a greater velocity but it still must return to earth at some point and at a lower altitude it may be vulnerable. Would NATO the US be so stupid as to purposefully design a system that would intercept an IRBM and be defenseless against an ICBM? Gauging the foreign policy initiatives of President Blinky, do we dare answer that in the negative....

JACKSONVILLE, N.C. - After nearly two weeks of investigation by the Jacksonville Police Department into an attempted burglary that left two men dead, Onslow County District Attorney Ernie Lee announced this morning that charges will not be filed against the shooters.

Until Friday, the circumstances surrounding the shooting that killed Diego Everette and Maurice Skinner during a burglary attempt at 107 Country Club Drive were cloudy at best.

Now, with the investigation complete, Onlsow County District Attorney, Ernie Lee detailed the events.

The two men were shot during an attempted burglary of the house, after being surprised by the residents, as they returned home. The burglars held them at gun point and threatened to kill them.

According to Lee, the Marine grabbed for the gun when Skinner looked away and a struggle for the weapon followed.

"The Marine resident was able to kick Skinner and free the shotgun from Skinner's grip. Skinner came at the Marine resident who was on the floor and the Marine resident two times.

The Marine resident then found Everette struggling with another Marine who was a guest in the home and shot Everette once in the rear end.

The whole altercation happened within 15 minutes, Jacksonville Police arrived on the scene at 1:55 am to find Skinner and Everette dead in the home.

South Carolina middle school teacher Patricia Mulholland has been accused of dragging a student under a desk during class and telling the boy "this is what the Nazis do to Jews."

Mulholland grabbed the 12-year-old student on Wednesday by his collar and said, "come here, Jew," according to the Associated Press. She then dragged the boy under a desk and made the comment about Nazis. The student said he had gotten up to sharpen a pencil.

A social studies teacher at Bluffton Middle School, Mulholland was arrested at 5:45 a.m. today, reported the Island Packet. She was charged with third-degree assault and battery, and public disorderly conduct.

That was just a warning. Next time kid, register those pencils at the principal's office.

Army May Reduce Force by 29,000 Soldiers

WASHINGTON -- Budget cuts may make the U.S. Army lay off 29,000 enlisted soldiers and officers, a Pentagon official said as GOP lawmakers sought to restore defense funding.

"I hate to throw out numbers, but I have seen numbers that will approach the enlisted category perhaps as high as the mid-20s -- 23, 24,000," Thomas R. Lamont, the Army's top personnel official, told the Senate Armed Services Committee's personnel subcommittee Wednesday.

"And on the officer contingent -- again these are very rough numbers and all based again on assumptions and attrition rates -- officers may go up to 4,500, maybe 5,000," said Lamont, assistant Army secretary for manpower and reserve affairs.

"There will be some officers -- and there will be some very good non-commissioned officers -- that will want to stay in the Army and will probably not," added Lt. Gen. Thomas P. Bostick, Army deputy chief of staff.

The backbone of every army since before the Romans has been the non-commissioned officers. They're the ones who really get the job done and help maintain unit cohesion. If you start slashing the non-coms, you are hurting the ability of the Army to accomplish its mission. Now let's see how the Army tends to handle this decrease...

JOINT BASE LEWIS-McCHORD, Wash. (April 26, 2012) -- Joint Base Lewis-McChord will soon be home to the headquarters of the 7th Infantry Division, Secretary of the Army John McHugh announced today.

The two-star headquarters, which will oversee the training and readiness of five of the installation's 10 brigades, will fill an administrative layer between those units and I Corps. The division headquarters will not be deployable, McHugh said.

"The I Corps headquarters has been very, very busy. It's only reasonable, it seems to me, to provide that layer of close-on command support just as we have at virtually every other similar-sized base," McHugh said in a press conference on the installation.

The intent is to install a new level of leadership and oversight to support those units, and ensure that Soldiers are properly trained, equipped and mentored.

McHugh's announcement comes after a period of massive growth for JBLM. Since 2003, the installation has grown by roughly 15,000 Soldiers and seen a military construction program totaling $1.75 billion, putting it among the largest bases in the United States.

[...] The 7th Inf. Div. is scheduled for activation on Oct. 1 of this year, and a commander is expected to be announced in a few weeks. Personnel will begin arriving in early summer.

Joint BaseLewis-McChord has had problems with soldiers being accused of murder and other crimes as well as a high suicide rate. Per the Seattle Times:

"The base has grappled with other tough issues, including a surge in suicides to a record level in 2012 and complaints by some soldiers that doctors had reversed their diagnoses of post-traumatic stress. There also have been acts of violence in the Puget Sound area involving the base's soldiers or former soldiers."

"Base officials have said that any community the size of the base is bound to have its problems and that its reputation has been tarred by 'a small number of highly visible but isolated episodes' that don't accurately reflect the remarkable accomplishments of its service members, including their work overseas and the creation of programs to support retiring soldiers."

First, reducing the number of deployable forces is not going to solve a thing. If post traumatic stress is the problem, throwing these poor men back into combat is like chumming shark infested waters. It's as if they want to make a bad situation worse.

Second, throwing a bunch of politically correct, career officers at a problem never solved anything. If you want something done, get the non-coms involved. Oops, can't do that, they're being escorted out the door.

In a recent study, a team of researchers presented a possible explanation for this color hierarchy. By creating a community of virtual people imposed with the limits of human vision, the researchers were able to watch color naming in action. Based on their observations, the team posited that the color hierarchy is caused by the properties of human vision.

You might have noticed that blue is last on the hierarchy. This doesn't mean that blue is the least significant color--it just means that humans eyes probably weren't able to detect it as easily as other colors.

In fact, blue light is unique because it has one of the shortest wavelengths of visible light. This property grants blue light some very useful applications.

Georgetown women’s rights activist Sandra Fluke went before a Congressional panel last month to demand free birth control pills. The Target up the road from her school sells the pill for $9 a month.

But before she went before Congressional leaders to demand $9 a month birth control, she took a lavish trip to Europe with her boyfriend.

Despite her public plea before Congress, Georgetown University released a statement this week that said the university will still not pay for a student’s $9 a month birth control pills.

The Huffington Post reported:

Georgetown University’s health insurance received national attention after Georgetown Law student Sandra Fluke attempted to testify about it in front of a congressional committee.

But despite the uproar that resulted — Fluke was denied a chance to speak, then called a “slut” by radio show host Rush Limbaugh — Georgetown announced Thursday that it wouldn’t make any changes to its contraception coverage.

“After thoughtful and careful consideration, we will continue our current practice for contraceptive coverage in our student health insurance for the coming year, as allowed for under the current rules issued by the United States Department of Health and Human Services,” wrote Georgetown President John DeGioia in a release to the university.

First Lady Michelle Obama boasted at a campaign event in Omaha, Neb. on Tuesday that "we made history" when the president's health care proposal was enacted and the administration issued a regulation mandating that insurance companies provide women with free contraceptives.

Why America Is Changing

The Washington Post has an interesting story about the declining role of religion in America as reflected in the growing numbers of young people who no longer list a church affiliation.

WASHINGTON — A growing tide of young Americans is drifting away from the religions of their childhood — and most of them are ending up in no religion at all.

One in four young adults choose “unaffiliated” when asked about their religion, according to a new report from the Public Religion Research Institute and Georgetown University’s Berkley Center for Religion, Peace & World Affairs.

But most within this unaffiliated group — 55 percent — identified with a religious group when they were younger.

“These younger unaffiliated adults are very nonreligious,” said Daniel Cox, PRRI’s research director. “They demonstrate much lower levels of religiosity than we see in the general population,” including participation in religious rituals or worship services.

Some of them will return to their faiths as they age, “but there’s not a lot of evidence that most will come back,” added Cox, who said the trend away from organized religion dates back to the early 1990s.

The study of 2,013 Americans ages 18-24 focused on the younger end of the cohort commonly known as the “Millennials” or “Generation Y,” which generally includes young adults as old as 29. Interviews were conducted between March 7 and 20.

Across denominations, the net losses were uneven, with Catholics losing the highest proportion of childhood adherents — nearly 8 percent — followed by white mainline Protestant traditions, which lost 5 percent.

We are now in a post-Christian America. No longer are people familar with bible stories or scripture. So many young people are completely "unchurched" and have no concept of apologetics or why sin is sin. God is a myth and all religions are equal in that all religions are inconsequential. And we wonder why the youth of our nation lack a moral compass. As does our President.

Quickly I called my sources at the United States Nuclear Regulatory Commission to see if there has been any suspicious nuclear-tinged events in Cuba during the past week.

Bingo! Havana showed up in a flash like a Secret Service Agent at a Columbian  all-you-can-screw buffet.

Same thing happens when you eat Almagordo neutron tacos.
