Surprise, Surprise, Surprise

.

OCTOBER SURPRISES
By Victor Davis Hanson

The Democrats will probably suffer historic losses in both the House and Senate in less than 60 days. The 11th-hour campaigning of the now-unpopular Barack Obama on behalf of endangered congressional candidates will not change much. In fact, most embattled Democratic candidates don't want the president to even set foot in their districts.

The public knows that the stimulus packages are played out. Unemployment rose, not fell as promised. All that is left are the higher taxes next year required to pay for the borrowed money that was squandered.

Those in Congress who went along with the Obama borrowing agenda now find themselves on the wrong side of the American people on almost every issue -- from federalized health care, higher taxes and bailouts to proposed cap-and-trade and amnesty.

Could things still turn around before November?

The Democrats' best hope is a major crisis overseas that would rally the American public around their commander in chief. Usually, cynical journalists dub an unexpected autumn bombing run, missile launch, or presidential announcement of a cease-fire or needed escalation an "October surprise."

These are the "wag the dog" moments that might turn angry Americans' thoughts elsewhere. And they have a checkered history that began long before critics alleged that in August 1998, before midterm elections, Bill Clinton ordered bombing missions in Afghanistan and the Sudan to distract public attention from his embarrassing dalliance with Monica Lewinsky in the Oval Office. He looked decisive and presidential; his Republican opponents looked nitpicking and petty.

Short of a nuclear holocaust, people will vote in a House of Representatives (with subpoena power) that won't give the consummate narcissist what he wants. And I suspect that the Democrats who wish to remain in their cushy jobs will reign in obama too.

The Democratic Party (the party of transparency and hope) self-destructed in an orgy of self-congratulation and spending (don't read it, sign it) that has no historical precedent. And I believe that the American people are about to hold them accountable.

I hope you're right, LL, but I have a feeling that thug Chicago pols will do anything to maintain power.

What happened to Wetzy? I think some one took him out when he was about to pen a masterpiece.

I'm with LL. Nick, get your head out of the gutter, man.

There will be an October Surprise ... wait for it. Be ready to call them out on it.

I predict a sex change by Michelle.

She will be much more likeable as a woman.

What I meant to say ... good grief .. .was that she would be much more likeable as a woman.

Dang ... I coulda been a contender.

Goomba, get your probiscus out of the dirt, man. We are going to clean their freaking clocks. And some actual conservatives are going to win, too.

So get your chins up. All 4 of them.

I am also trying to figure out an October surprise that will trump anything else that may be happening in the public arena.

Look for Bawney Fwank to conduct his re-election campaign clad in a French maid outfit replete with feather duster and fishnet stockings with thick, wanton seams (the kind Nickie likes to wear).

Look for Nancy Pelosi's face to explode after receiving another face lift/botox treatment. NASA satellites will detect the flash from deep space and suspect an ICBM launch. The American public will remain riveted to their televisions as they watch bits of her face ignite as they reenter the atmosphere.

Ignoring the ropes, traffic cones and saw horse barricades surrounding it, Keith Olbermench will fall into his own asshole. There will be a media frenzie as emergency service personnel attempt to tunnel through to rescue him. Keith will survive on liverwurst sandwiches until after Christmas when extraction crews finally manage to bore through his colon.

Sig... I believe Obie has already suffered that fate.

I'm looking for Obama to dangle the rumored mortgage forgiveness scheme.

Biden seemed so smug when he said he knew that they would keep the House. At the time it made me suspicious that they already had their "October Surprise" planned.

Now with the whole world in an uproar over a Quran burning and Obama's favorite Imam basically threatening America if the Ground Zero Mosque is moved, I wouldn't be surprised to see another Islamic attack on American soil be just what the Democrats need to take the heat off their poor performance.

The timing would be the thing. Too soon, and the President's poor response, such as to the Gulf oil spill, will cause it to lose it's effectiveness. Too late, and the comparison between the memory of a strong, forceful George Bush and the current vision of a weak, indecisive Barrack Obama will be causing Americans to see red in more than one way!
