March of the State Spies

One in 78 adults in the UK came under state-sanctioned surveillance last year
"Under plans unveiled earlier this year, the police and security services would gain access to the public's every internet click and phone call. This would include, for the first time, monitoring the use of social networking sites such as Facebook."
The Daily Mail reports that surveillance on civilians has reached frightening new levels.

Britain's extraordinary march towards a surveillance state is revealed today by shocking new figures.

They show that one request is made every minute for officials to spy on someone's phone records or email accounts.

The number of Big Brother snooping missions by police, town halls and other public bodies has soared by 44 per cent in two years.

Last year there were 504,073 new cases - an average of 1,381 a day. It is the equivalent of one adult in 78 coming under state-sanctioned surveillance.

The snoopers are using a law originally aimed at terror suspects. But their targets include people suspected of storing petrol without a licence and bringing a dog into the country without quarantining it.

Liberal Democrat spokesman Chris Huhne said last night: 'It cannot be a justified response to the problems we face in this country that the state is spying on half a million people a year.

'The Government forgets that George Orwell's 1984 was a warning, not a blueprint. We are still a long way from living under the Stasi - but it beggars belief that is necessary to spy on one in every 78 adults.'

The requests to intercept email and telephone records were made under the hugely controversial Regulation of Investigatory Powers Act 2000.

A total of 653 state bodies, including 474 local councils, are allowed to use its surveillance powers.

The Brits have used the States for an example.

9/11 is a good excuse for all that.

Give them an inch and they will take a yard. This type of infringement on liberty must be crushed.

Meanwhile, Obama is encouraging the Two Minute Hate over here.

Mammon, I think the US and UK are neck-to-neck on this one. Is there any part of London where one isn't on camera?

We are quickly getting there. It's disconcerting.

Opie,

Obama would probably say the same thing about you.

Thanks, Goldstein, uh, I mean Rhod.

Hmmm...Emmanuel Goldstein..."a lean Jewish face with a great fuzzy aureole of white hair and a small goatee beard...a clever face..with a kind of senile silliness...the face of a sheep..."

That ends the reading for today, but I do have a bad bellyfeel about committing a facecrime if I'm ever back in the UK.

If you ever return to the UK, you'll probably be dragged out of the airport by MI6.

Ah, the "Fingermen" have finally arrived.

I agree with Opie. This type of infringement must be crushed. I think crushed like a bug would be good. This is violating our Civil rights. We must stop the government from gaining more control of our lives. I think biting back sounds good. Hey, maybe biting the legs of all the nefarious Congressman/Congressman.

Reminds me of McGruff the dog. Lets take a bite of crime or these political criminals.

That's right, Red. And they're punching back twice as hard.

Welcome to Amerika.

We must resist tyranny at every turn.

”Never give in. Never give in. Never, never, never, never--in nothing, great or small, large or petty--never give in, except to convictions of honor and good sense. Never yield to force. Never yield to the apparently overwhelming might of the enemy.” Winston Churchill, Harrow School, October 29, 1941

Oh man, that is scary. We are on our way to being just as bad or worse I believe.

Terri, there is so much government misbehavior in place and on the way that I'm concerned that many aren't even prepared for the lengthy battle this has to be.

Anonymous said...

Kris, this is insidious, and it's spreading into every nation. We're naive to think that big government wouldn't do it here.

I noticed in many things we are always just one step behind the Brits---could be an Orwellian state is looming just beyond the horizon.

Nickie,
I saw you in the followers section over at Furry Tails, I wondered if you'd seen the video MTBLaura had posted today.

Its in the same vein as your post, and really quite disturbing in all its possibilities.

Chopingo,

It is that way all through Europe. Now it is our turn to give up to Socialism or fight.

I hope we are strong enough to fight.

I'm sure that America will see the same kind of snooping in the next few years. However, I doubt that Americans will be as laid-back about that intrusion as the Brits are.

Socialism/Communism is now like a monstrous, cancerous octopus spreading it's tentacles and tightening its grip on the entire World - the American people need to act decisively at the first opportunity.

Always on Watch, stay on watch because I'm not as confident as you. These are thugs we're dealing with.

I heard a story recently, that US State drivers license pictures are taken in accordance 'International Standards', and specifically with the intention to be able to use facial recognition on you anywhere in the world.

It's happening today. It's been happening for a long time. 1 in 78? I'd say 1 in 1 for anyone old enough to drive.
